Cold spell in SoCA

Tonight's low temp forecast is to dip under freezing. I have my wax apple covered along w/ the small cherimoya seedlings but will leave the plumeria to fend for itself. We always have a few nights a year but this year seems to be rather late in the season. Is anyone else taking precautions?

That last freeze killed the baby grass i helped plant at my friends house.. The whole thing just dead overnight. I had some ferns get nipped too but they are making a return. It's been cold here by Disneyland but the teeny bit of rain was nice. Loving the blue skies and clouds. Bulbs are happy with temps in the 60s.

I loosely covered my freesias for 3 nights. Have lost buds a few years ago. It was down to 31 degrees, but no frost on cars when I drove away to week thru the neighborhood.

I had a few droopy hanging buds on geraniums.

The cape honeysuckle probably damaged but it doesn't show for a week or 2.

I agree with _dog. I grow my young clivias under optimum conditions year round until they have at least 12 leaves. This means giving them regular water, fertilizer and bright light 16 hours a day. If they are in pots, I also repot every six months or so to keep their roots healthy and growing. Using this method, I was able to get about half of my last batch of seedlings to bloom at 30 months. Usually clivias take three to five years to bloom.

Hi, did you get your tree taken care of yet? Where in Central NJ do you live? There is a great family company, Neuls Tree service, from near Bordentown. I find them quite fair and reasonable. Removal can be darn expensive, but I think they might charge $500?? I got the old crippled up lady who let her yard get overgrown discount, but feel whatever price they quote is fair. If you did get it done, what did you pay?

Hope the honeysuckle recovers too!I have a winter honeysuckle that I enjoy a lot. If the flower buds were not visible, it may tougher trying to see if the buds made it ok. Like you said, you will just have to wait and see then. If they had been visible, you could visually notice whether they were damaged as they turn brownish. So, not much you can do now but wait and see if the shrubs are rebloomers (low chance of that if the prev owners pruned them and got no blooms).

I promised some people here some sans this spring but my stock is looking too poor to send out. Hopefully this summer I can send out some extra Sans I got like Bantel's Sensation, Eve, Whitney, and MoonShine. I also got some regular hahnii and Futura 'Compacta'. They were in my basement and showed some stress signs but are now recovering. My tall sans got no worse nor better but at lest stayed ok. Any one who I promised please be patient with me. I have you on my list. Above futura and hahnii are for gift giving. Got to take pictures of rest of collection.

No freezes here by the beach, but temperatures in the 40s took a toll on my more tropical plants. They’re limping along for now.

My baby avocados that I just put into the ground lost all of their flowers, which is totally fine because I was going to pinch them anyways but was sad to see.
