I added wooden board and batten shutters and it changed up the ENTIRE look of my exterior!

I don't know if you could do any of these, but here are some ideas.

flatten the gable and do more of an extended porch/overhang.

Add the cedar accents, enlarge the porch

some other ideas just for the porch, not so much everything else in the picture. maybe landscaping.

Id say a huge trending color would be blacks or navys to paint the vinyl siding. And some cedar shutters and cedar beams on the porch. Takes it into the "modern" days. And if you can spring for it, some stone veneer along the bottom half around the house. And nice plants. If its dryer out there, if opt for faux boxwoods along the front, but they're a bit expensive for the uv resistant ones.

I think the house looks great.

The landscaping though....that will really make it.

Thank you all for your advice! Really appreciate it. The siding is actually wood, not vinyl and we did add that. I picked the green paint (which I'm now regretting but I think it just looks off since theres no greenery right now) We are going to have screens made for the windows and I think I will paint them olive green to make to add some detail. I also saw this photo and thought adding another post and a railing like this might help? thoughts?

These are actual 1920s farmhouses (TX and GA + 1 remodel) as opposed to modern interpretations of “ranch” houses. I don’t think you have a real problem with the main roof line, but I think you could redo the front porch to extend the width of the main facade. It still looks like you have great trim around the windows and the siding looks in good condition (it’s not vinyl, is it?) — I don’t think there’s a lot to do besides the porch. Great house!!

Here's a quick mock-up. I think this is a very cute house and I don't even understand why you're obsessing about the (perfectly normal) roofline.

Such a charming house — I really like your ideas for it, they’ll enhance the wonderful 1920’s style. I’d paint the front door for sure and research cottage landscaping. I’m in Texas, too, and there are so many wonderful, lush plantings you could do that have an old-fashioned feel and would hug that sweet house.

At some point, maybe extend the front porch to one side. I’m picturing cute vintage porch furniture. :)

Kate, I played around w/some photoshops to give you ideas.

landscape, foilage, flowers, and if you can swing it, a new path

super cute w/the brick path and flower bed style.

(or, get some concrete stain or paint and redo the one you have. maybe edge it out w/bricks or pavers?

this makes it look a bit better. this isn't difficult for you guys to tackle.

you could even paint it w/diff colors and a stencil to look like this! not expensive. just DIY

Once you get the path done, it will draw the eye up to the home. you have some nice flower beds, so concentrate your color and foilage w/those. Landscaping will be over 50% of the overall look of your home. look up how to style flower beds near the front, and get some guidance.

this is more tropical, but you can see how the diff colors and heights all work together.

If you want more of a cottage farmhouse, try something like this

Now, the porch/door. I gave you a spring green door color and tried to add some flowers and ferns, hanging from your porch eaves. Extending the porch to the left and right would really make a big diff in overall appeal.

gave you one here w/cedar posts and a wood design in the gable. copper accents, copper/turquoise green pottery

this is an option you could do w/dark green on your trim. look at Farrow/ball Green Duck.

It's a cute house. Don't worry about the roof. Really, people get fixated on one feature/flaw of their house. Add a bunch of flowering shrubs and plants and it will look plenty cottagey. I assume your grass is yellow for the same reason mine is; february.

@Jilly, i love those inspiration photos. especially the first one. So charming! Our front yard is pretty shady with all of our lovely trees but I think we can still make it feel lush. Also love that IG page. lots of good ideas in there. I also like the idea of a red/burgundy screen color and door.

@bethh Thank you so much for all those photoshopping images. It's so nice to have some visuals like that. I love the idea of improving the sidewalk. That is definitely something to consider. I love what painting the door and landscaping can do.

After driving around in my town, I've noticed some cute arches which I think could add charm too.

Also, just for fun, here is what the house looked like before we remodeled. It had short windows and asbestos siding which we had professionally removed. Trying to take it back to its roots.

those arches are just 'corbels'. check w/a local salvage place or wherever they sale farmhouse type of decor and you'll prob find them. (of course you can buy new ones).

I still like the cedar shake idea in the gable. don't you think adding this would look nice w/your green?

@bethh i like the idea the shaker front of the gable! I'll look into that. I also really love the idea of a pergola. Since the gable is centered, should I do a pergola on both sides or just one? I don't want to unbalance the original part of the house if that makes sense.

This one is basically like yours. it's not a pergola, but you get the idea.

no gable, they they did a pergola off to one side. porch swing. on the other side it's balanced out visually w/lots of plants.

I think this would look cute on your house. just doing a large porch all the way across.

i know this is a modern look, but this one is offset on one side.

I think what you are noticing is that your front columns are too small. I think you should wrap them to make them twice the size, which will make them fit proportionally with your home.

Also, would you consider redoing your sidewalk? You could replace it with a winding pathway lined with flowers. This would fit in really well with your cottage style home. Tons of beautiful plants do well in shade, so don't worry about finding good planting options.
