There's a huge range in price, as you say in sink faucets. Still, there are really good brands and buys at every price level. In theory, price should go up with the amount of brass and integral (meaning real finish not coated) metal used in a faucet. So the heavier the better. Most faucets have some plastic pieces. Certain brands carry a status premium -- Dornbracht, Waterworks. They are excellent quality but you pay plus for styling and name. I personally favor pull downs over side sprayers and pull outs (I have one of each) but that's very personal. As someone said, it's one less hole in the deck. But I'd suggest going to store and do a pull and touch and see what appeals. I have a pull out in our mudroom but found I don't care for the "heavy head". Pull downs tend to have smaller, lighter heads. Some pull downs have a switch to sprayer. There is the lock vs nonlock function on that to check. Some don't mind holding it down for the spray; others want to push the button and have it stay. Check which faucet silhouette appeals. (I pick the same shape over and over but not everyone will). Examine the hoses. On the mid-range and lower end faucets those pull outs will likely be a knit mesh reinforced with some metal. On higher end faucets they are all metal. Also be sure the length of the pull down will reach all around the sink. These can vary a bit. I also pull the specification sheets for every faucet from the mfgr website so I can see how it will work in the space behind the sink -- to see how it opens, how much clearance is needed, to be sure the spout swivel is ok and won't hit anything. That there's clearance for each aspect. A lot of people go for Deltas, Grohe and Kohler faucets. There are KWC fans on the high end plus several others including Rohl. Then there are brands like Chicago Faucet and one Sabjimata recommends (perhaps she'll weigh in here) that are said to be very sturdy and reliable. Someone linked a faucet quality assessment from a builder's website. I don't have it bookmarked but whoever does might link it. Basically it runs through a lot of brands and makes subjective judgments about them. I don't agree with all the categorization and judgments but it's all subjective anyway and there are a large number of brands reviewed so it's a useful place to check.

I wanted a faucet that had a faucet head and a sprayer that was easy to use, ergonomic (trigger style was hard for me to use). I got this one; it has the faucet and a separate sprayer, which I like, and they can function at the same time or you can turn off the faucet part and just have the sprayer. You do have to press the sprayer lever to turn it on, it doesn't just come on, so if you turn the faucet part off while the water is still on, the sprayer doesn't automatically spray. I love it, though, (not a huge fan of the style, but the function is awesome) and we like the fact that it's solid metal construction. My husband hates cheap plastic sprayers. @gail.katz Delta provided replacement parts on 2 separate occasions, but the faucet continued to develop leaks over time. My kitchen is currently gutted with new Brizo articulating faucets on site and ready to be installed along after new cabinetry and countertops. The old, leaking Delta faucet has already been discarded. I don't know the model, but it was one of the standard, gooseneck pull-downs from probably 20 years ago. My understanding is that Delta's new DIAMOND Seal technology is supposed to go further toward preventing leaks than the technology that was available at the time my old faucet was manufactured. Not all of Delta's faucets feature the DIAMOND Seal, so make sure whichever one you get has it if you go with that brand. I did as much research about faucets for my kitchen renovation as essentially any other component, which means I was researching faucet quality and visiting showrooms with faucet displays over about a year's span before deciding on a Brizo articulating faucet in the Artesso style. Brizo is a Delta brand, but I really liked the articulating design so decided to upgrade to the Brizo line which is on the expensive side but about middle-of-the-road on price when you compare to other luxury faucet brands. The faucet I chose has a PVD-applied stainless steel finish which makes the finish among the most durable available in the industry today. Any of Brizo's styles that list "Brilliance" in front of the finish name are PVD, so "Chrome" finishes are just electroplated, but "Brilliance Stainless" in the Brizo brand, for example, would be a PVD finish. And, all of Brizo faucets come with the standard Brizo/Delta lifetime warranty. I had read some earlier reviews about the Brizo articulating faucets failing at the joints, but I was able to confirm that this has been fixed, so unless you order old stock from a showroom somewhere, all the newer articulating faucets should wear well. The styles of articulating faucets with covered hoses are all newer with the upgraded joints. You might really consider splurging on a Brizo articulating faucet if you like the design. It is adjustable in many ways to help prevent back strain, and there is no retractable hose to get caught. I found a sale on Brizo from Quality Bath and got good pricing on mine. One had some surface damages and had to be replaced by the supplier, but that process went smoothly, My renovation involves a large sink, 42" wide, so I opted for 2 of the faucets to go with the large sink.
