Melted Plastic on Top of Fireplace Insert - Can't Get Rid of Smell

Chris T

Hopefully, I can explain our situation without it being too confusing. We recently purchased a house with a gas fireplace. When we turned on the fireplace, we started to smell burning plastic after a while.

Apparently, the children of the previous owners put plastic toy coins through the top grate/vent where they ended up on top of the insert. The plastic melted on top of the insert when the fireplace was turned on. I scraped the plastic off and it looks like I got it all, but we are still getting the plastic burning smell when the fireplace is on. It's been a full year and the smell is still there when we have a fire going.

Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?
