Plants you can't grow?
Comments (25)My list is big, but one I've tried a couple of times is the common Crucifix Orchid (Epidendrum). Got some from my father and they slowly dwarfed and then disappeared. He had clumps of them growing in the garden. Late last year I got some more from a friend in a warmer climate hoping those may fare better. So far they're still hanging in but staying small (fingers crossed). Another I've tried is Chalice Flower, Solandra maxima. A friend sent me a whole lot of already rooted cuttings. A few rotted straight away and the rest put out some new growth but also rotted over the next few weeks. It's annoying when you know people who have these plants almost as weeds....See MoreI can't stand it

Comments (33)Well, I made the trip this morning. I didn't meet the person from the infamous voice mail though. I told the clerk when the cat was taken in and what she looked like and the story about the kittens. She said that she didn't know of anything like that but that I was free to look at all the cats they had. There were some beautiful animals there, but I didn't see my hotel kitty. I can only assume the worst. I showed the lady the picture and she said she didn't remember seeing a cat that looked like that. I guess they get so many it's hard to keep up with each one. They had several kittens as well, but I don't know which if any were hers because I didn't get a look at them before animal control came. Maybe it worked out for the best. If I do get a second kitty as a companion for Jasper and myself it should really be a boy (according to everyone who seems to know), and one that is tame. I don't know why I wanted this kitty so badly... we didn't connect... I spent hours chasing it and watching it run full speed away from me. I asked myself why I really wanted this kitty. I think I just wanted to feel good about "rescuing" a "homeless" kitty. I want to expand my family, but I think when the kitty is right the situation will work out. There was a beautiful silver and grey kitty at a gas station 2 days ago that I tried to approach. It ran so fast, I thought it was going to dart into traffic. I think I would like to get a kitty of the street instead of going to a shelter (especially this one after my dealings with them!). I will just have to find one that isn't quite so scared if that is even possible. I would of course take it to the SPCA to have it speutered and vaccinated before I took it into my home. Anyway... that's the update... thanks to everyone who responded....See MoreNeed help with urine smell, can't figure it out
Comments (10)The post does not say where you live so I cannot tell which plumbing code you are under, however this house is new to you and if you are under the IRC (International Residential code) or the IPC (International Plumbing Code) there is a very strong likelyhood that you may have an "AAV" (air admittance valve), AKA "Studor Vent" or "Cheater Vent" instead of a true vent pipe in your bathroom. One quick way to get an good idea if you have an AAV is open the cabinet under the sink when you smell the odor. If you have a defective AAV the odor should be much stronger under the sink. AAV's have a spring loaded plunger that will allow air to enter the drain line to prevent a negative pressure that would suck the water out of your traps, but, when working properly they are closed to prevent sewer gasses from escaping from the pipe. Given that it is a mechanical device, it also stands that it is subject to malfunctioning. AAV's must be installed at a location where they can be periodically inspected and allow access for repair. Typically for a bathroom they are installed on the lavatory bowl waste arm in the cabinet under the sink. Look at the sink drain line. If you have an AAV you will see a Tee fitting on the horizontal line coming out of the wall and before it connects to the P-trap from the sink bowl. You will then see a vertical line attached to that tee which rises a minimum of 6" above the horizontal line and generally it will rise up behind the sink bowl. You will then see a Cap on the top of the line, but if you look close you will see either some slots or a square opening on that cap fitting. That cap fitting is the AAV. AAV's are mounted by means of ordinary pipe threads. On the top of the vertical riser there is a female thread adapter and the AAV is simply screwed in. To replace it you simply unscrew the existing AAV, than apply teflon tape to the threads of a new AAV and screw it back in place. You can get the AAV's at any hardware store or home supply center. Personally I prefer to go to a True Value or ACE hardware and you will be more likely to find a clerk that really knows what their talking about to help you....See MoreThyme2dig NH Zone 5
