Here's the thing, if you mix them and in the future you need to redo the floors or just retouch where an accident has occurred you will not be able to exactly match it. Scenario: It seemed like the finish you mixed up would never go bad but fast forward a few years and it's all dried up in the can and you have to remember what you mixed together and thought you would never forget!! But you did and you can't find where you put that formula you wrote down. On top of that they have changed dropped one of the colors from the line. How do I know this? Because it happened to us!!! We have mixed stain on our floors and don't have a clue what we used way back when we built the house. I like Provencial, it's an old color that base come back into favor. They are so similar I think you would like either one in the long run : ) It does show more dog hair if you have light color of pets.

Hi jaluca, welcome! The floors are just a shade over 5" wide, they are all one width. DH and I had decided on random widths and when I went into the reclaimed flooring place I changed my mind at the last moment and went with all 5". I think both would have looked great, but I'm very pleased with the 5". We have a water-based finish on the floor. We opted not to go with a more typical oil-based finished in part for environmental reasons (and to reduce odour) but also because oil finished tend to yellow the hardwood and I loved the blonde/light brown colours in the birch. Before deciding on random widths,make certain installers agree because from the mill widths are a real mess to work with. If you perfer appearance of random,installer might want them cut in 3 or more widths instead of trying to fit boards of unlimited variations. I to have walnut boards from trees harvested by me and my brother from the family farm several years ago. For primitive,antique and country pieces I am pleased with appearance of mixed sap and heart wood. For highly figured examples and use in formal pieces I steam the material rather than staining. The land which home sits on was sold a few years ago so I'm glad we didn't use the wood on floors. We have built and had built several pieces of furniture for various family members. I completed one rifle stock and have a secound about 3/4trs finished with help from a grandson. Both stocks are fitted to rifles passed down from Granddad. Each piece has a brief history carved underneath or inside and a desk plus both rifle stocks have additional hand written details concealed within them. If you don't use the wood in floors,for goodness sake don't sell it.

Here are pics of the floor which is maple wood with Jacobean and the oak stair treads that are also Jacobean. The oak definitely takes the stain darker. We were going to rip out 2000 s/f of Bruce solid wood and replace with wider planks until I found out how much it would cost to tear out. And then I saw my friends refinished floors and loved. The thinner planks are not nearly as noticeable on the dark floor. Previously we had natural maple that had yellowed and the bevel groove between looked like black lines. I’m much happier with the dark floors now, but we do get a lot of natural light during the day, have a mostly open floor plan and 9ft ceilings. The pet fur and crumbs and dust are MUCH more noticeable on the dark floor but it just makes me vacuum more often which isn’t a bad thing!
