The delanatii is from sub-tropical Asia. Outdoors in Florida would stress it quite a bit. It would be nice to know what the other paphs are but to be honest it doesn't matter. Outside is out, unless you are prepared to do more than simply find a sunny spot and tell them to go for it. Indoors, your problems are light and humidity as you know but those are easily fixed! Easily. And once fixed you will have a superior growing area to anything short of a conservatory. I presume you have A/C, you will have to pick a room to doctor and set up lights on a timer and a humidifier on a timer your financial outlay can be under $100 for everything, less even. You say nothing of what other orchids are being grown and how they do. If Oncidium intergenerics are growing well a paph hybrid with delanatii like 'Magic Lantern' would do just fine. Species delanatii will be fussier, proof is in the pudding, if it doesn't grow you know you need more light. The difference between temperate, sub-tropical and tropical is about 25F not counting record breaking extremes. The real deal breaker is light. You can in all likelihood grow all three paphs on the same windowsill either with the A/C turned of in that room or with a humidifier going or not but without lights winter is always going to be a tough go and many, many, many of our cherished 'chids don't make it through their first one. scubastan, I'm not good at describing the s/h method, and I was going to provide a link, but unfortunately it was blocked because it said I was promoting the site. The only thing I'm providing is info, but now I am forced to explain semi-hydro. And since I'm not an expert and find it difficult to explain, I'm almost inevitably going to do a realy lousy job at it. From what I understand, s/h to me is just like those self-watering pots you see all over. You know, the ones where you put the potting soil in a compartment over a reservoir of water and the soil wicks up the water. Well, semi-hydro is almost exactly the same, only you use hydroponic media like hydroton/LECA. You can make the pots yourself at home by putting a few holes an inch or so above the bottom of any plastic container of the appropriate size for your plant. This provides the reservoir. Then you fill the container with LECA media and when you water thoroughly, any excess will exit the holes while the water in the reservoir wicks up through the media. The only thing you have to do is top off the water when needed so it is filled up to the holes. From what I understand (with orchids, anyway), you only weakly fertilize with this method. I'm doing something similar with my miltoniopsis. I have it in a net pot filled with hydroton and it is submerged about 1/2 inch to an inch below the surface of my tank. The clay on top shines slightly so I know the water has wicked up into the clay media. I just checked the roots today and noticed a new growth on one of the roots. Thankfully, it's working for me. I've never tried it before.

A small variety grows wild here in our wooded areas. Quote form an orchid site: These Paphiopedilum orchids have no water storing features like pseudobulbs.They are generally terrestrial, soil growing, growing in the shade of the forest floor or bogs where they can always be moist. So watering needs to be available constantly. Paphiopedilum orchid care requires that they be moist and never dry or soggy. Paphiopedilums are unique, there are both warm and cool growing plants. Slipper orchid care will alter a little because of these two different types of Paphiopedilums. The warm growing need temperatures from 60 - 65 F. degrees to 75 -85 F. degrees. Whereas the cool growing orchid Paphs. need temps from 50 - 55 F.all the way up to 75 - 80 F. degrees. These orchids can also do well with a constant temperature and the cool growing ones can stand temperatures into the 40's if needed for a short time. Those Paphiopedilums which have green leaves are usually the cool climate ones, while those with mottled leaves are warm growing ones. As most orchids, lady slipper orchids require humidity between 40 - 60%, remember they usually grow on the rain forest floor. This may need to be augmented by using humidity trays. You can get a flat tray with sides. Fill the tray with stone pebbles and then add water about half way up. Place the plant on the tray making sure that the slipper orchid roots are not touching the water. If it does there is a good chance for root rot.

The only bad thing about that, is that I have a lot of fruit trees, they lose a lot of leaves. Right now, I have leaves all over my yard. We pick them up, they come back. I live in Miami, Fl, it's very hot here. We rarely get any winter, and when we do, doesn't last too much. I thought I lived in zone 10, now I see there's a zone 10a and 10b. I believe Miami is in zone 10b. I have to repot a lot of orchids now. I'm dreading it, always scared I'm going to kill them. Some like where they're at, some don't. All the orchids love 1 of my mango trees, the Keitt, but I can't attach all of them there. I already have 3 attached, and others hanging. I also have other mangos and avocado trees, which some have orchids on them too. That's why the vandas are so good, you just attached them to the tree, and you don't have to do anything else.
