newbie - what to buy in Southern Cal?
Comments (7)We live in Pasadena and just had to replace our Kenmore front loader (don't ask). My brother loves his LG so we went looking at Best Buy. They were, as of 1/14/08, having an open box blowout. I got the LG WM2233HW for $520 delivered and they hauled the old one off at no charge. Its large capacity and the on line reviews sound great. I also purchased the $80 three year maintenance program to give my wife the peace of mind that we weren't getting stuck with someone else's lemon. I suggest you pick up one of those back yard gardening type strorage sheds from Home Depot ($100?) and put that up against your house where the hook ups are, cut a hole in back of the storage shed, and presto, you have a good enclosure for your new washer and dryer units that you may one day want to move to the house you buy in that plunging market. Comments (3)I am also north of the Valley (in TO) and spent a very long time researching cabinets, GCs, etc. I found that no one was truly unbiased because every GC I contacted worked with specific cabinet companies or local cabinetmakers. All the KDs I spoke with were also affiliated with certain cabinet lines. Even the interior decorators in the area worked with certain cabinet lines/build firms. No one I found was totally independent. I paid one KD for a design and posted it here for revision. He is in Westlake and works with Crystal Cabinetry. I then paid for a revised/more detailed layout from a design/build firm in TO. They primarily use Greenfield cabinets and their construction costs are very high. I also got quotes from a number of cabinet lines locally and from over the hill. In the end I decided to use a GC that we used first on a smaller bathroom remodel and a cabinetmaker he recommended who is in the valley. They did a great job (love the GC, really like the cabinet guy a lot) on the bathroom so I am using them for the kitchen. The absolute best layout advice I got was here on GW and it helped that I had a very clear vision of what I wanted before I worked with anyone. Cabinet style, finishes, appliances, plumbing and countertop materials were decided on by spending countless hours researching and looking at photos online. We are starting in 3 weeks- appliances have been bought (go to Pirch in Glendale for amazing selection/assistance), stone has been purchased and all plumbing fixtures ordered. I only need to choose backsplash and hardware. Good luck!...See MoreBest Quartzite Southern California
Comments (30)I have a few. State College Distributor is where I get all of my tile, but they also have slabs. Not a huge inventory, but they have some decent choices. Ask for George S. if you go there. Across the street from them is a huge stone yard and they deal in more exotic slabs. There is a place in Walnut where I've gone and purchased slabs. it's called Color Marble and it's right off the 60fwy at the 57. they actually have decent prices, especially if you deal in cash. Last time I went they had rows and rows of quartzite and marble. I know NoHo also has many stone yards, but I don't remember the names....See MoreFull Kitchen Remodel Cost In California
Comments (24)@https://www.houzz.com/user/christine-kim652 I remodeled in Los Angeles and had custom cabinets for kitchen, bathrooms, a wall in my home office and a room divider. The guy also did some miscellaneous stuff like my interior doors which were a custom design. I don't think anyone can give you a ballpark figure because it is going to be dependent on the design including the configuration, the wood species and the door. I will say that I had the guy come back relatively recently to reconfigure the interiors of some of my cabinets. He constructed and installed rollouts for the upper shelves of my pantry to make them more accessible and an additional shelf rollout in one of my bathroom vanity cabinets. He also changed one of the doors in my sink cabinet (the one that held the trash container) so that the door pulled out in one motion instead of how it had been originally configured which was open the door and pull it out. He also had made a custom ceiling medallion for a vintage chandelier. The cost for this - including installation was $1800 - the medallion was $500 so the other stuff was $1300. I wasn't charged tax on the items or the installation nor did I pay tax on any of the cabinets or other stuff he made and installed during the remodel. However, there is sales tax payable for the services of an interior designer in California....See Morestephcat
