Disappointed in new air fryer--do you like yours?
Comments (13)I think the big problem is that you started with too many adjustments. There was another thread here recently praising an air fryer so much it almost tempted me. :) The way it works is by blowing hot air, like a compact, powerful convection oven. Some have a stirring want for making chips. I can do the same thing in my wall oven and use tongs to stir. :) The whole point of the air fryer rather than the wall oven is to be compact, and super easy and not tie up your oven (they were invented for making French fries in tiny European apartments where you're lucky to have more than two burners and there's no oven). By starting with the Todd English video, you put it back to difficult. The time for cooking chicken increases non-linearly with how big/thick the pieces are. That's why "fryer" sized chickens are supposed to be small. Try it again with some French fries or sliced potatoes, some breaded tenders or strips, and other smaller things that people report success with. Get some successes of your own under your belt and learn how the machine work. Follow some recipes exactly, not just method, but exact size and quanity of the exact food recommended. And when it says spray with oil, spray with oil. There are some cans of oil spray that have pure oil (and therefore you must check them to make sure they don't go rancid in the cupboard), and there are some pump sprayers you can put your own oil in that work pretty well for awhile, though they tend to wear out too fast. Once you've mastered the stuff everyone else is doing, you'll have enough knowledge and experience with the machine that you should be able to adapt your own recipes and borrow methods from videos. The view is a heck of a lot better from the top of the learning curve!...See MoreDo you have an air fryer?
Comments (54)Murraysmom, I feel the same way about the book. I didn't expect the recipes to be quite so elaborate, but the book has lots of good information. Plus it's beautiful! My DIL made the Cheeseburger Slider Pockets last night. She's a vegetarian, but she said my son and grandson said they were great. She substituted ground turkey because that's what she had. I may try the sweet potato fries tonight. PS: I did try the sweet potato fries, and they were great! I gave up on the mandoline (that's my usual response to it), and cut them by hand. Tried to make them a uniform 1/4" but I'm sure the size varied a bit. Gave them only a slight spray of oil, which didn't get all the pieces, but that was okay. I cooked them a little longer in the second stage (400º) than the 10 minutes stated in the recipe. Really enjoyed them. I'll make the rest tomorrow....See MoreWhat do you cook in your air fryer and how big do I need for 2 people
Comments (46)Does it fry? No. Does it cook small amounts of food, convection style? Yes. We like ours and since we are recent empty nesters, I love it for roasted veg, thin cuts of meat which are easy to overcook conventionally. Great for warming up leftovers that could get soggy in the microwave. It cooks faster than our toaster oven and makes the best baked potatoes/sweet potatoes ever. I keep it in the pantry just off our kitchen and of late have been using it several times a week. Today, I did roasted beets which I will reheat when I do baby potatoes and green beans for dinner. My 20 something daughters use theirs several times a week. For the investment it's a great little appliance provided you have the space for it. Since we don't eat a lot of toast and we have a toaster for when we want to, I am thinking of getting rid of my toaster oven, now that we have the air fryer. ETA - when we were a family of four, it wouldn't have been as sufficient as it is for us now....See MoreMy new Air Fryer
Comments (14)I love my air fryer and use it almost every day. And now I have a serious case of air fryer envy, how I would love to have one like yours!! ! ! ! Mine is just a simple little 6 quart Farberware, but it is a real workhorse! Chicken, hamburgers, sausage, fish, roasted vegetables, toast, individual pizzas. It's all good. Sorry, I don't have any recipes to offer, mainly I've just adapted the things I've always made to the air fryer. Sometimes my 'adapting' is by trial, error, and guess work (and not always successful!), and sometimes I'll Google a similar dish to get an idea of how to make it in the air fryer. Enjoy your new 'toy'! Rusty...See More- 4 years ago
