Escrow Shortage?!?
Comments (17)I'm in the same boat U R! $2000 escrow shortage and don't know why! Could a real estate Lawyer help or just $ down the drain? New payment is $200 higher!! First, a real estate lawyer is probably a great way to turn a $2,000 escrow shortage into a $2,000 escrow shortage and a $450 lawyer bill. You need to find out why you were short. In the end, escrows are pretty simple and the report should be easy to read. Your escrow account pays for certain things authorized by you in closing. The two most popular things are (1) property taxes and (2) insurance, but some banks will add HOA fees to the list. You will get a statement from the bank that shows the demands made on the escrow account and the payments into the account. If both of these are correct and there isn't an overpayment, then you owe the higher amount. As mentioned above, many times the shortage gets doubled in the year following the shortage as they have to make up the shortage from the previous year and prepare for the higher bill the next year. There are often hiccups in the first few years as timing differences get sorted out. Often the property taxes have weird due dates but these typically stabilize in year 3. After that check your property insurance and tax rate to see if there has been an adjustment....See Morepossible food shortage
Comments (37)David and quietlife were at least reading the newspapers ;-); this is not an entirely fabricated concern. There *has* been a food shortage, boys and girls - Africa and Asia have borne witness to it this year. In Asia, India and China - remember the two countries with the two most massive populations? - went from being a net exporters of food to net importers. Both Asia and Africa - beyond the standard stock of drought-prone areas - were sorely short of food. Both continents saw a huge uptick in food prices, and, btw, so did we with bread and bananas grossly more expensive than even just last year and most vegetables substantially more. (Last week on either WSJ or NYTimes or WashingtonPost or The Economist there was a comparison made of the price of various food commodities betwen 1998, 2007 and 2008 - in general, small differences in price between 1998 and 2007 but LARGE differences between 2007 and 2008 for most of those items). I never did get so panicked about food that I would horde it (I'd rather reduce my intake and eat less of the fresh stuff than continue to eat the same quantity of canned/tinned/stored food). But I certainly noticed it in the RAPID and substantial increase in our green-grocery bills this year - and in my house, it is just DH and me. I can't believe you folks didn't notice it! You all have to tell me where you live so I can move there because out here in Boston parts, we certainly felt the pinch. Oh yes, in addition to the increasing cost of food, I did notice that there were more empty shelves at times also - in particular, I think, over the summer time. Causes for the shortage (yes, shortage) and the high costs in the US? Well, this was all being speculated on A LOT earlier this year. High oil costs and some climactic crises were thought to partly blame but those are 1-off things, right? True, but one concern the economists had was if the weather thing was going to be more habitual than aberrant if this is a by-product of climate change. For the veracity of that hypothesis, I imagine we'd have to see what next year and the years after bring - if more food shortages in India/China/Africa; well, that does put pressure on global food stocks. More pressingly, as quietlife said, the wide-scale subsidies on food crops and the huge market for ethanol - which is not subsidized - was considered much more worrisome as growing corn for ethanol is so much more lucrative for farmers over growing food. I'm a bit surprised that so many of you missed all this debate about the food crisis - whether it was the shortage overseas or the price hikes globally. WSJ and The Economist were all over this subject for several months earlier this year....See MoreAll things Citrus 4 August 2015
Comments (255)Thanks so much Cory, like my avatar says when I embark on a hobby I am deadly serious about it! But I know I still have tons to learn and look forward to spending more time with you guys absorbing your knowledge. For example I just recently averted crisis I think. My citrus has been doing so well in my room that I recently moved in about 6 of my massive super hot container peppers thinking I could keep em going all winter. Major disaster almost occurred when an aphid infestation exploded and I am still managing it. I removed all the peppers and have been drenching every citrus in the sink a couple times a week with insecticidal soap and I think I nipped it in the bud luckily. Rookie mistake! Thanks Steve! Appreciate it and thanks for all your great tips so far your light buckets are super cool. Yes it is a hopeful time for us in Canada! I hope the positivity extends to my trees and yours!...See MoreHow Will the Current Shortages Affect your Future Shopping Behavior
Comments (92)I'm doing limited shopping. Costco twice in 6 months, Target only curbside, food co-op every six weeks, Farmer's Market every 2 weeks and Trader Joes every 2 or 3 weeks. A local high-end grocery every 10 days or so. Haven't found paper products that I prefer, because I used to buy them at Target but they won't deliver or do curbside and I'm not going inside. Someone posted (here?) about Staples having TP, so I looked at they had the Scott 1 ply I need for my septic, but they had their own house brand that looks identical for much less $$, so I bought 2 packs of 20 rolls. Delivered in 1 day for free. They also had some sanitizing wipes (their brand) and a free hand sanitizer if you spent more than $30. I have NEVER been able to make their website work for me, so I ended up in a chat, then a phone convo, but it all worked out. I should be good for many months....See Morepudgeder
