Round table - 60” or 54”?

Hello,

Would love your thoughts on a 60” v 54” round table. We are a family of four but in either case the table would be extendable to accomodate guests. The room size is 13’ by 14’ so we would be fine with the larger table in terms of space. My husband prefers the larger table because he thinks the smaller looks disproportionately small in the room. I think he has a good point but am leaning toward the 54” because I am worried that 60” is uncomfortable - you are seated quite far from the person across and cannot easily pass food and it also seems uncomfortable for board games. Would love your thoughts, if you have a 60” table that you eat at regularly. Is it uncomfortably large for four people?

60 width is a queen sized mattress. Think about sitting on opposite sides of a queen sized mattress and passing things around. I would find it a bit large, you may not.

When things are passed at the table, they are passed to the person adjacent, not across the table.

Things that stay at the table, stay in the middle of the table.

If you want to avoid the constant back and forth, you can have more than one set of salt and pepper.

If you plan to entertain groups of 8 or more, I would not get a round table at all, having a conversation is really difficult, and it tends to feel like a banquet hall.

I would push chairs in as far as they comfortably go. I was just noticing that the seats are not completely under the table and still reach nearly to the center column. They may be extra deep as well as wide. That would also make the table seem smaller. I pulled up Wayfair to check chair sizes and they have several styles similar to what you have chosen but with an 18" width. You might want to look there if you want something similar to the wider ones.

Thanks @Patricia Colwell. I think the room can handle it, but since you mention it... The room is 11 x 13, so I initially figured an oval table would be good. However, one of the ends of the room is a walkway from the kitchen to the living room so I'd like to keep that clear. End result will be a round table centered in a rectangular room. Posting a couple pics but please ignore the mess...We are cleaning the basement and things are making their way to a huge donate pile in my living room. Still need paint and trim throughout the house but that Black Friday sale on the table...

A 60" table is seating for 8 where they chairs can be fully pushed in, ten people at an event like a wedding reception with smaller chairs. If you are normally seating four, even the people seated "next" to each other will be fairly far apart.

^^ That is correct, but where the conversation gets difficult for the 8 people at a 60" round table is you really only can speak to the person to your right and left.

That is why a rectangular or oval table is better. Their width ranges from 36-45"

I agree, I don't really like tables this big for home use; I prefer a table around 48" round with one leaf for 4-5 people for daily use.

We ate at my grandparent's house quite often, and their round dining table had to be at least 60" because at least 6 or 7 people sat around it comfortably, maybe 8 occasionally.

I have a 42" round pedestal table at one end of our living room that has a heavy 54" pad that can be placed on it when I want to use it for dining. Haven't used it with the 54" pad in a while, but I'm pretty sure I only seated 5, at the most might have squeezed 6 people around it, and there was not a lot of space in the center for serving dishes.

We often use the 42" table for games with our grandchildren which is adequate for many games, but 54" might be better for some, but too large for little kids to reach everything.

I think I agree with your husband that a 54" table in a 13' x 14' DR would look small. Our DR is 13' x 13' 3" and has a 42" x 5' oval table with 6 chairs around it, and we keep a 12" leaf in it for a total of 6' most of the time on an 8' x 10' rug. There is also a 5' x 19" credenza next to a 54" double pocket door on one wall, 4' x 9" deep bookcases on each side of a 54" centered pocket door on another wall, and a 24" x 30" chair with a 24" x 30" hexagonal table next to it in the corner between the ~7' wide triple windows on two of the walls.

If you will have more than 5 people eating dinner at the table, I'd definitely go with the 60".

We have a 42" x 5' rectangular trestle table in our large breakfast eating area that seats 8 comfortably with the three 12" leaves in and numerous holiday serving dishes in the center. When I have non-family groups here it seats 10, and in a real pinch I can squeeze in 12 people by putting 2 people on each end (I add smaller chairs and put the serving dishes on the peninsula and we do buffet style for our potlucks). Can't possibly come close to this with a 60" round table.

And all of this also depends on the size of the chairs and how easily they can be moved.
