Can someone identify this furniture marking?
Comments (11)Hi - just saw this posting via google. I have a small bookcase with a similar symbol. On closer inspection of your photo, then re-inspection of my bookcase, it looks as if the mark is actually "pacman pacman" followed by the numeral "4", carved within the 'mouth' of the rightmost 'pacman'. My symbol does not have the horizontal lines above and below the pacman symbols, but does have the vertical line to the right of the '4'. The serial number on my bookcase is stamped 4778, and there is a further engraving at the upper back, the letters "RPLY" above the letters "DWH". No idea where it's from....See MoreCan you identify this Ironstone mark?
Comments (11)The McKinley Tarrif act was passed in 1891 and stated that all imported goods must be clearly marked with the name of the country of origin. After that time anything had to be marked with the country to be imported into the US. And before that time many things were also marked. the words "made in" were added in 1921.but the custom didn't last very long. So anything that says Made in England was likely made after 1921 and anything that just said England, may have been made almost any time beforeor after that. Also items bought in England not intended for import did not have to be marked with the country of origin nor any specific words. I believe the jug is not very old ( 25 years at the most) and perhaps a Chinese or Japanese repro because it has no name of the manufacturer and a very generic "English looking" logo, with the lion and the unicorn.
