Which (one only, now) Centifolia should I get?
Comments (27)Eric, that's definitely one of the most beautiful striped roses. Don't be surprised to find you're finding spaces for "just one more centifolia." Hard to go wrong with any of them. Just don't do like I did in Fresno with Gros Choux de Hollande (not a true centifolia) and plant it where you plan on a 4'x4' bush, because it's more like 8'x8' or larger, but fantastic. I was constantly taking huge branches reaching to the street and tying them back to the fence. Thorny job, that. --Ron...See MoreWhich VENT should I get?
Comments (8)To avoid paying extra for name-brand, buy the three main components separately. Many companies will make the catchment thingie and put a filter in it. You specify the motor, and they order it. See fantech.net for 20 or 30 blowers. Where you place the motor is up to you. No need to have it bolted into the catchment thingie. It could be in the kitchen's ceiling, separated from the hood by a couple feet of duct. Yes, an inset is the right term. It's good because it makes the thing more invisible. No reason why this is a bad idea. A hood is designed to grab that fast-rising greasy smokey air and run it through a filter and suck it out of the house. Grease can be airborne for a very very long time. Microscopic grease specks. It's what carries food smells to your nose. HulaGalj, If you promise to make your french fries on one of the back burners, not on one of the front burners, then a hood that doesn't stick out over the front burners is "ok". Smoke is another airborne thing to exhaust. Steam is also good to exhaust. The above post is easy to rebut. HualGalj, the questions you've asked are good but not spot on. A motor, a catchment capture volume/shape, and a filter: these little components are easy to make, easy to assemble, and in fact all independent from each other. So no they don't come in "unreliable/reliable" packages, or from "unreliable/reliable" manufacturers. The real question is if you can get a custom package and spend less. Yes. The shape you choose to make will have its drawbacks, but nothing earthshattering. You know that there are thousands of "hoods" sold today that have NO catchment space; smoke greasy air rises and hits a flat surface (the filter), and a lot of air escapes !!!. Hundreds of downdraft exhaust systems are sold too, and you ought to see how much smoke steam and greasy air escapes that so-called exhaust!!! It's the volume designed in the catchment space, that temporarily holds the smoke. This is the best design. Making it big enough to cover all your heating elements is A Good Thing To Do... but there are many that don't have this. HTH...See MoreWhich cryptomeria should I get
Comments (6)I don't know about being an "expert," but I have many, many Cryptomeria cultivars in my garden, including five Yoshino which I use as screens. As everybody here has noted, they growth fast, and I would estimate that the 2-3 feet per year rate is about right. I have one in a spot with good moisture and full sun that probably grows faster than that, though. It was about eight feet tall when I planted it in 2010, and it's easily 30 feet fall now. I'd give you an exact height, but my triangulation skills are pretty shoddy. Only my dawn redwood grows faster. As to the question of how big the Yoshino will ultimately get, I don't know. There are many planted around Atlanta, but most seem to be poorly situated. The biggest culprit is extreme crowding issues due to being planted too close together when young. I'm not sure I've seen one 60 feet tall, but others may have. For many years, Leyland cypress was the conifer screen of choice around here. It's only more recently that Cryptomeria have become popular (and for good cause, if I may opine)....See MoreConfused, which simple grow lights should I get?
Comments (0)I want to set up a simple grow light station to keep my seedlings growing the best I can till I take them outside. I may do some micro green growing too. But that would be pretty much like growing healthy seedlings. An YTer suggested these shop lights: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B44WG93/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_10?smid=A1V31LM9AH9FRH&th=1 while asking the vendor a question, they said their 'grow lights' would be better for me: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZJKL5F7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A1V31LM9AH9FRH&th=1 These are different kinds of lights. I just dont have the background knowledge to make an informed choice. I would be so grateful if you tell me what would work best for me or what to read to make the best decision. Thanks so much!!...See Moremerrybookwyrm
