Siding question - LP (Lousiana Pacific) / Hardie Board/ Cedar

Kurschner LLC

So are replacing our aluminum siding and originally contemplated a combination of real wood Cedar shakes combined with LP smooth sharp edge siding. We were told not to go with LP by a reputable siding company as it won't hold up and suggested the smooth hardie board that is slightly thicker and has a rounded edge. We really thougth the LP Smooth with sharp edge would look the closest to real wood, so were disappointed to hear this. We had them bring out samples of the Hardie board and real cedar siding to do a comparison if those were our only two options. As expected, we definitly liked the look of the real wood siding better (we are talking 4" exposed) however would add a significant increase to our budget. Do any of you have any experience in LP smooth siding or have any strong opinions on LP vs. Hardie vs. wood. Any regrets? We are in Minnesota so definitly have weather elements. Thank you!
