Warming Up an East Facing Family Room
Comments (11)housegal200 has given you great advice. I like the alternate suggestion of plain curtains (in a heavier fabric) close to the color of the wall, which will give you more decorating options within the room, without immediately drawing the eyes to the curtains. Please make very sure that the rug is as large as you can make it. That will make a huge difference. With your gray sofa choose warm colored pillows, yellow, gold, terra cotta, which should work well with the carpet; in fact, pull the colors from the rug. I feel very uncomfortable looking at your TV; it's just so extremely high. Can the mantel be lowered? It looks off at that high level. Are you planning on changing the color of the kitchen cabinets? It doesn't marry well with the gray couch, but if you incorporate that brown color in the rug or other pieces it would help. Beautiful pieces of art on the wall in warm and cool colors will direct attention to it rather than the walls. The coffee table is rather harsh and linear. Would you consider a glass and chrome coffee table? That will make the room look larger and show off your pretty rug. It can have a second tier near the bottom for handy storage of TV remotes, books etc. Books by the way, and some large plants, will give warmth and personality to a room, along with paintings that speak to you and are not just generic wall art. More than anything else, putting your personal stamp on your home will have the greatest effect, and will truly make you feel that you are at home. It will also make visitors feel comfortable there since it will be so much more than a decorated, impersonal space....See MoreAdvice on paint color east facing house
Comments (2)why don't you get a sample and see how it looks? Pale Oak is another nice neutral. Have no idea what furnishings you have or other colors in the room, so how can you expect us to advise you on colors?...See Morepaint color for living room with lots of natural light.
Comments (0)I have a living room that measures 17 x 24. There are 2 windows to the north, a bay window to the east and a window to the south. We live in a cold climate so we are getting carpeting that is cream and taupe color. My adjoining dining room is a warm green with a tile floor that has shades of browns, taupe and hint of black. I also have oak woodwork. My curtains are cream with a beige/taupe design in them. They are pretty new so don't really want to change them...See Moreneed a change, east facing low light
Comments (7)There is nothing wrong with a darkly DECORATIVE and cozy room. There is nothing wrong with a space that requires electricity, even in daylight. Wash a room out with 4000 k lighting? UGGGH!!! The most hideous light on earth. It doesn't mimic daylight, it just screams welcome to your local surgical center! Room don't die of darkness. They die from a lack of decoration, electricity, and beautiful lighting. Mark Hampton knew that, Diana Vreeland with her "red room" knew it, no matter what you may have thought about her, or that much talked about space. There needs to be contrast.....something "light" somewhere, in most cases. Or not! Depends the intent. In this case? Pick ONE color for walls. Lighten up the upholstery on those sofas.....a LOT. Light upholstery throws light INTO a space.Trade the curtains for a woven natural shade. ....? Add beautiful lamps, accent lighting ( sconces, picture lights,) and use them!!! At some point? You realize a room is more than wall color, no matter your style, or the room....See Morejuidog
