What is your one favorite David Austin Rose?
Comments (49)Ok,now that the newbies have been here awhile (and I added some others) here is my list Sophy's Rose - no scent, but always seems to be blooming and that color! Tradescant - Perfect. Scent, color, bloom form. Golden Celebration - so far a golden child, love the butter yellow color. Perdita - a smaller version of Heritage with a creamy color. Fair Bianca - compact, beautiful bloom form. I haven't seen Pat Austin bloom yet (I'm on my 2nd bare root for this year, but I think this one will make it.) I haven't been as thrilled with CPM as I thought I would be. And a few others haven't bloomed enough to judge (Graham Thomas, Portmerion, Wm Shakespear 2000)....See MoreDavid Austin Golden Celebration Rose - Care Instructions
Comments (33)I ordered three GCs a couple weeks ago and can't wait to get them in the ground. I've been growing a few other Austins here in Michigan. Jude the Obscure, Pat Austin, Bishop's Castle, and William Shakespeare 2000. I'm quite a novice, but have had success in Michigan planting bare root with either Austin's Rootgrow that contains mycorrhizal fungi or Espoma's Bio-tone® Starter Plus which is an all natural plant food enhanced with biostimulants, beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae. These must be in direct contact with the root to maximize effectiveness at planting. So planting bare root is a great way to go when using this approach. The theory is the fungi tap back into the soil to draw massive quantities of minerals and nutrients, mainly phosphorus, which a Rose desperately requires to bloom. I follow a regular schedule of Bayer All-in-One (3x per season), Rose Tone(3x per season), and Alaska® Fish Emulsion(4x per year). I know I contradict my otherwise organic approach by using the All-in-One, but I'm not a sprayer kind of guy. Someone told me that the Mycorrhizae improve plant growth and help the root system be more resistant to soil borne diseases. The roots give the Mycorrhizae sugars in exchange. They supposedly help improve performance for less-than-perfect soil, watering, and fertilizing. Again, I'm a novice. Very much so, but so far, this has worked for me....See MoreWho am I? Comments (29)I have 5 abe Darby's & 3 tamoras they both have great scent - your rose looks like Darby to me !! The colors can vary depending on weather when it comes to Darby. In winter my blooms have strong apricot, peachy yellow & pink but in summer it's very pink. Tamora can also vary in color due to weather. When I saw your pics- Darby was first rose that came to mind. I'm a David Austin rose freak - I have around 20 different austins, plus a few extras of my favorite Austin bushes but I'm not counting those. Tamora is a great rose also, the scent reminds me of starburst :) yum but here in class the bush isn't the most vigorous grower- Both are susceptible to black spot in my garden. Darby however is extremely vigorous. I've noticed on my Darby, the blooms can vary greatly, some are so packed with petals & others not so much ( prob Bc of the heat!) i just dead headed all of mine otherwise I would post pics :( sorry but Good luck!! :)...See MoreWeird blooms on David Austin Boscobel rose
Comments (5)It doesn't look like insect damage close up, I did have them sprayed a few weeks ago for aphids and had to cut them down a bit (but they were mostly on the older bushes). I didn't spray Roundup, although I have a landscaper that may have (but I doubt it)... it does look closest to that kind of damage though after a quick google search. It is a bit weird as it is only most of the plant that's affected... there are one or two canes that look normal on one side of it, and then the rest is growing in looking weird and... frizzy, for lack of a better word! Doesn't look like rose rosette and no white mildew... also this bush is right next to the two healthy ones, I just planted them all this year as bare root roses. Could it be something toxic in the soil just right in that spot?? paulieinct, did your rose come back from the roundup damage?...See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
