Baby it's cold outside! (Do I need a blanket?)

OK, that's a rhetorical question.

It has been a couple weeks averaging -4˚ C. in our area. Going down to -20˚ by morning. And here's one builder's answer.

Blankets are for wusses. (Tarps spread over the bare soil serve no known purpose.)

Our Building Code requires protection of the soil under footings and open excavations from freezing. Typically, builders use straw, hay if it's protected from moisture, or plastic bubble blankets.

If no protection is provided, the frozen soil expands in the winter--moreso in clay soils--then thaws and drops come spring. (I once forgot to protect the four concrete pads for the steel posts; come spring, the posts were dangling three inches from the concrete. There was no drywall installed, so the floors hadn't sagged yet!)

Furthermore, note the foundation is completely backfilled with no bracing or support.

Again, in conflict with our Building Code. (Though in full accord with loads of "expert" Youtube builders.)
