Hello Susan, Greg here, I am one of the ceiling fan experts at Hansen Wholesale. I have been selling ceiling fans for nearly 30 years now and as a test, I put the Minka Aire Concept II in my daughters bedroom, and the Emerson Curva Sky in my small home office. Both rooms are about 10 x 10. They are both 3 blade flush mount fans that are quite similar in style and price range. I prefer the Emerson Curva Sky because it is a bit less heavy looking and runs quieter due to the blade design. It also comes with a 6 speed controller compared to the 3 speeds of the Minka fan. It is also in the same price range. So, I prefer the Emerson fan over the Minka fan. Emerson has been making ceiling fans since 1895, Minka Aire is a recent company about 20 years old now. Both are good brands, but I prefer Emerson for the longevity. I used the 44" fans in these rooms, but if your room is any bigger than 10 x 10 you should use the 52" versions since they move a lot more air. Both versions were upgraded this year to include an LED light and have an "L" in the model number. The previous year's models have a Halogen light. I love my bedroom ceiling fan. It's a quiet Hunter white fan with a 3 piece soft marble glass light kit. It bought some pretty nickel and clear pull chains for it. I do have soft side table lamps but sometimes that isn't enough light. I like to see when I vacuum and have the big light on when I clean. While it's great to have your house beautiful, it's also important to have it functional. You can have both. It's SO nice to have the fan on low when you sleep. It's the the best! :)

Two lights on it (actually, they're the first-generation IKEA Symfonisk speaker lamps) with 600 lumen bulbs are plenty to light the room. You could reduce the chance of strobing from recessed lights by using deep baffle lights (example) and even further by using dark reflectors You might consider tape lights attached to the topside or underside of the wall shelf. We put a 60" in our bedroom last year which is about 17' X 18'. It's closer to square than your room. My husband the retired engineer says he prefers to get a larger fan because then you can move more air at a lower speed than with a smaller fan. I can tell you that size doesn't look big to me. I was surprised when he told me it is 60". Look for ones with DC motors as they operate more quietly which is important in a bedroom.
