Anyone have a Janome Sewing Machine?

Not sure what happened but my "A" foot is damaged--the pin with wire coil and black dot on right rear side is now bent up. It doesn't seem to affect anything---yet.

I just don't feel like driving to my local dealer to buy a new one.

Is there any reason I can't use foot "F" for the straight forward and backward stitching that "A" is supposed to do? I have a approx. 11 year old Janome 6500 if that matters and my next project is a 30" X 30" pieced quilt.

I haven't driven to a dealer for almost 30 years. I called a dealership and had them put a part (needle threader for the Bernina) in a box and mail it to me, and I paid with my credit card over the phone. The person on the other end said, "You'll void the warrantee." I said, "yeah, I'm shaking in my boots, here."

I'm not hard on sewing machines. No worries. The warrantee would expire before I break something. There are also reputable companies who sell replacement parts online. Just look for good ratings from their customers.

The immediate challenge (not problem!) I see is that you're going to make a quilt, and the presser foot you intend to use may not give you that perfect 1/4" seam quilters desire. In the picture, it looks wider. The opening in the foot is wider, too. I don't know enough about quilting to tell you if that will affect (effect? I never know) how precisely your two pieces stitch together. I'm a solution-oriented woman. When I needed to put in an invisible zipper and didn't have an invisible zipper foot, I've used a pintucking foot or a regular zipper foot. You quilters are a different sort - very precise and all. I guess test and measure before you start your project. In fact, piece SEVERAL pieces together for an entire block and measure the result, to make sure tiny fractions of an inch won't add up to something unacceptable along the way.

That pin with the black button is for leveling the foot going over thick seams. You can still use it if it's not operational. You can use any foot for anything you want - except zigzagging with any foot designed for only straight stitching.

I have a Janome 3125 that I got at the Hancocks Fabrics here. Got it for classes, camping, whatever & love it! It's only weighs around 11 lbs, uses the same bobbins as my home Janome & is a good machine, better than I even expected, so have been very happy with it. Got it on sale at the time for $89, regular price is $129, but they run them on sale alot, so watch their ads or check their website. It comes with a good warranty too, which is another plus, & at the same, I picked up a nice carrying tote for it too, for $15. Good luck! Nancy/NC..

I have small children at home, so I cannot yet justify spending money on a fancy machine, but you can bet it's on my wish list, or my "some day" list. Lol* Right now I have several machines I use regularly...I recently purchased a featherweight and it's my favorite for straight piecing. It's also portable which is a plus, and really cute to look at. For sewing curves or anything a little more involved than piecing, I use a Simplicity Quilter's Classic, which was a very affordable machine, under $200, and it has a lot of features the more expensive machines have. My only gripe is the feed is kind of wimpy so I don't use it for anything other than quilting. If I have to do some heavy duty mending I use my featherweight or an old sturdy Singer I have in the house. My next step up would probably be to a Viking Husqvarna or a Baby Lock...although I think really, while a lot of people are devoted to their brands, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the major brands. I just like those two because they are slightly more affordable upscale machines. :) Good luck! Loved reading everyone's posts here!

"That's where my thread gets tight! Really tight! I have sat with it for hrs trying to figure out why but it still is too tight ." Try rotating the wheel to raise or lower the needle slightly as you pull gently on the thread. At a certain point in the cycle the tension clamps down on the thread. http://www.singerco.com/support/machine-serial-numbers will tell her when the machine was made, based on the serial number.

I did not know that!

For crisp seams I have a 1/4" quilting foot.

"I'm a solution-oriented woman"---yes! I once used the zig zag stitch to make a button hole. The length was set to was '0' so it was a satin stitch rather than /\/\/\/\/\

I didn't know that about the black thing either. Glad to know that!

My favorite parts store for my Janome has been Amazon. I bought my machine from Ken's through Amazon. I've also bought many extra presser feet for it, through Amazon. Back at my old house, my nearest dealer was about 25 miles away. Now I have moved and I have a Janome dealer about 5 miles away.

FWIW--I still use the A foot with the bend. Thanks to moral support here I was brave enough, for me, when none of the feet were staying attached to what-ever-the-part-is-named that I tightened several screws and ta da! all is good.
