Our custom cabinet makers made the shelves in our closets. To design them dh and I sat down with the dimensions of the room and drew it out on paper. We decided to go with his and her sides of the room. Hanging rods can only go a certain span across a room without reinforcement so we started by putting two equal his/her shelves on the wall at the back of the room and worked from there with each of us designing our own side. We both had an idea of how much hanging space we needed for pants and shirts. We've designated the rest of the back wall for that. The width of hanging clothes is 23-24 inches. We have another wall for hanging space for dresses and suits. Then we've added various shelves for places to put shoes or bins/baskets. I don't like to waste space so I had the guys go on up to the ceiling around the room with more shelves. We have one short 3 foot wall space where we couldn't put shelves so a full length mirror will go there. We haven't moved in yet so we don't know how functional our plans are, but it looks good. The cabinet guys did walk around with me to mark the walls and make modifications as needed.

I would opt for bigger bath and one shared closet. Would overall be less cramped for space. If you do the closet with a wall closet system with various drawers and hangers there is more than ample space for you both. If not, then you have too many clothes. In my closet I have 3 drawers and a hanger above those in multiple areas, then I have hangers for long clothes, and we have corner shelving and shelves for storage on top. Lots of space. Shoe rack on the floor under the long clothes.

A walk in closet requires at least 6’ of depth to have hanging on both sides. And that only leaves a skinny 2’ walkway. 7’ depth is better. Otherwise stick with a 24”D reach in closet, hopefully accessible from the bedroom. That depth doesn’t account for the wall framing, which has to be accounted for. A reach in will take away usable wall space. That has to be accounted for in furniture placement. Bathrooms all have minimum required spacing for fixtures. And plumbing drains have to slope 1/4” per foot. You need to slow down and hire the right designer to make the most of your space. The designer will have contacts with the right contractors. It isn’t a $198 project. Or even a $19,800 project. Some thoughts: A hot water recirculating pump is the next best thing to an electric water heater right at the faucet. I have hot water in my shower and everywhere in 6 seconds. Small expense. Saves water. Instant gratification many times a day. A shower only *needs* to be big enough for an adult to face the spray and rotate with his elbows out. People of any age benefit from a hand-hold at the spray and at the door. Shower seats are dangerous and awkward to clean. Our hand-held spray is adjustable on a vertical bar -- no additional, stationary spray. A swinging shower door is easy to wash; must be far enough from the spray not to require a side seal. Our MBA would be drafty without it's own door. Spend for a *powerful* exhaust fan. I'm glad we installed floor heat under the bathroom tile. We have two large pedestal sinks with 'laying space' on them. Two mirrored-in-and-out 'medicine' cabinets are sunk 5" into the walls above the sinks -- doors close flush with the walls. A full closet holds towels, toilet paper, bottles, soaps, cleaning supplies. There's no stooping to root through lower cabinets, and the room looks larger. I find pocket doors cumbersome for daily use. They have a less secure 'seal', and the sliding motion is unnatural for me. We have only two, on our his/hers walk-in closets, and only close them for 'company'.
