Is a front entry closet necessary?
Comments (24)Just an FYI for those of you who, like me, don't have a front entry closet. DH and I do host large parties regularly. The one time we had a party and the weather was cold and rainy, I put a free-standing garment rack in the office to provide a spot for guests to hang up their coats. With a large open-top plastic trash can to hold umbrellas, a mirror on the wall and the powder-room nearby... the office became an instant "cloak-room." And, no damp coats left laying across a bed. The garment rack I have is probably 20 years old and was originally purchased for use in the laundry room of our old house. It is solid metal and stood up well to decades of hanging up dozens of wet t-shirts every week to dry. When we moved, I decided to keep it. Takes about 3 minutes to pop it up and it stores away easily when I don't need it. I checked and it looks like a very similar model is still available. Here is a link that might be useful: garment rack...See MoreFront Entrance way

Comments (10)In your introductory statement, you say that you're interested in changing "... the front deck into a more pleasant entry way." Let's compare the existing deck to two concepts. Presently, it seems sized such that it could accommodate 3 or 4 people entering. In my concept I haven't the size of the deck much. I've widened it just a little, mainly to allow for building wider steps ... maybe twice as wide as the current steps. It might accommodate an additional person or two. In your concept drawing, you've changed the deck from merely an entrance, to one sized for family gatherings -- lounging, dining, BBQs, etc. Is that how you intend to use the deck? If it is merely an entrance, it does not make sense to overwhelm the space with a lounging and entertaining deck sized for a family ... unless you are receiving visitors in groups numbering into the teens. First, figure out its purpose and base its size on that. Then work out its configuration. Whether its a wood deck or masonry porch structure doesn't matter to its function, as either can do the job. The materials will have more to do with durability, maintenance and the visual, artistic impression that you are trying to make. In general, I think people value masonry porches as the superior ones, b ut it isn't necessarily always that way....See MoreBest way to fix the paint on my front entrance?
Comments (4)Frustrating. If you decide you are going to replace it anyway.. any reason you can’t try a bit of sanding, wood putty, caulk and paint until you can find a someone you trust? If you lived anywhere near Orlando, Florida, we could refer a wonderful carpenter. Although these small jobs are really difficult to get help with. Hardly worth the craftsman’s time unfortunately. Sorry this happened....See Morezerafarg
