The only affordable crab around here these days comes in a can. Aldi had some type of softshell crab that they wanted $50 for a small bag of maybe 3 lbs. Hard pass!

I think I have a can of lump crab in the pantry. I should make some Clam Chowder one of these days. Haven't made any since last winter. I have some potatoes my brother gave me that are starting to sprout that I need to use.

I love crab! We usually get it alive from an Asian seafood shop with big tanks of live crustaceans, shellfish, and finfish.

I have had live king crabs (cooked, not sushi). Amazing is all I can say.

I was in H Mart before the holidays, they had a few live king crabs in the tank. $55.00 a lb. Obviously they will not cut one up for you, you have to buy the whole one. I say each one is at least 15 lbs or more. Considering that may be the yield for king crab meat is about 1/3, that would come to may be $1,500 for the dinning table. So I just looked and admired.

A few days later, I went back again to H Mart to shop. There was only one left in the tank.

OK I am a cheap skate.I bought a few dungeness crabs, $15.00 a lb.

King crab legs are my favorite, but I don't need to cook them myself.

A few years ago, there was a lot of king crab on the market, possibly because of the effect of red king crabs that had been brought to the Bering Sea by the Soviets.

I frequently order crab when I go to Vietnamese restaurants, but it can be quite messy to eat. I also like New Orleans crab boils, but have only had that on the Gulf Coast.

Over the holidays, I saw a king crab claw for $69.99...not a leg...one claw!

Looks like the season is going to be quite sparce this year! I might have to buy a few to freeze!

I always cook the live crab myself.

This year, we bought pre-cooked crab from a local fancy market. We were too tired to deal with fetching and cooking live crab.

The pre-cooked crab was - well, rather tasteless. I stopped eating cracked crab long before I normally do, it was just blah. We put the rest of it into a pasta later.

Recently, canned crab meat actually taste not too bad. They are not cheap. Very convenient for making crab cakes.

We haven't had any yet this year...we get it live, DH cooks it (usually friends helping). 'It' being dungeness that we prefer over any of the others. I saw some before the holidays on ice behind the butchers counter, described as 'fresh' and it was lump meat, no parts of legs visible at all....$69.99 a pound. The cooking suggestion was 'crab cakes'. I like them, but sincerely hope I wouldn't have to pay $70 to make crab cakes ;) - when we live 15 minutes from a fishing port.
