What would you do with an extra 15-inch base cabinet?
Comments (20)Is GardenWeb awesome or what? Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who posted their thoughts. I saw the paper towel holder thread and think I can find another place for mine. I like the idea of U-shaped holders for vertical storage - was planning for that over the fridge but this would be handier. rosie/desertsteph's ideas would work for that. Why not a 15" drawer base? Well, all other base cabinets are drawers and I've pretty much figured out where everything will go already, so not sure I need yet another one. jakabedy reading about your experience and seeing your pictures was really helpful, esp the KA mixer. I was going to put mine across the kitchen in another cabinet but it would be so much more useful to have it available in this corner. Do you think the pull-out would hold a KA mixer and a Cuisinart? Or would that be too heavy? Thanks for the Hafele link, Angie - lots of interesting ideas from that manufacturer. As far as the filler goes, to the left is 1" filler to match the width of the corner cabinet's door, then another 2" to allow for the pullout to extend without hitting the corner cabinet's pulls. The 1" filler next to the range is based on experiences with my range (Electrolux) posted on the appliance forum. There's a bit of a bulb out to the front control panel and an inch filler on each side was highly recommended. Making the filler one or two inches narrower doesn't really help because the next bigger cabinet size would be an 18-inch one, and there's definitely not enough space for that. I'm off to Ikea to get the base cabinet and look at the drawer and vertical storage options. Thanks again everyone....See MorePullout storage for 12" wide x 15" deep base cabinet
Comments (10)Well, I'm disappointed! I did not know that IKEA Sektion discontinued 12 inch drawers. I have an Akurum kitchen, with 2 12 inch, a 15 inch and 18" pull out, plus I hacked pullouts under my sink and converted another base cabinet. I was going to suggest ordering 12 inch door parts and attaching them to the 12 inch door. But since they no longer make 12 inch drawers that's not possible. It's really too bad since the 12 inch can act as filler many times and I find them quite useful. I have a 15 inch pullout next to my range that holds oils and other baking items. I do like the function of the drawers that pull out independently though since it can become very difficult to reach items when they are all attached to the door. Mine only has the base attached to the door with two independent drawers that I spaced according to the height of my items. I do actually like the Sektion 12 inch pull out since one side of it is not attached so it looks like it will be easy to reach items. I'd like it even better if I could add a small drawer pull out at the top of it. Sorry I was premature in my assumption that the new line would be more similar to the old in function. Hope you find what works for you....See Morehelp with corner cabinet plan (Sektion/Scherrs)
Comments (76)lisa, we are actually planning to do butcher block/Waterlox counters in the kitchen itself; I was just hoping that putting laminate over the hideous tile in the pantry would be cheap and easy. No, the cabs are not tiled -- just the counter/BS. I was hoping to avoid tearing out the countertop in there because the BS is also tiled and a pain to deal with. To answer a suggestion above, we can't do a 24" cab under the overhang bc we need a 2" clearance for the door (want hinges on the R; there's a cabinet on the other side of the peninsula), and we only need it for the big dog food tin, so we don't need the extra few inches. guco, the corner range is getting the heave-ho! We are planning to put the new one on the wall in a very regular way. :) As for supporting the peninsula counter, there will be two cabinets and a DW underneath, in addition to the side panels. Isn't that regular? For the pantry, I like the idea of staining and sealing plywood, or a pre-fab laminate. I just need it to be cheap, because $. We are already at our budget, and nothing in the pantry is included... For the fridge fit issue, perhaps we will not move the peninsula closer, and I will just know that there's a likelihood that we would need to take the doors off to do repairs....See MoreDoes anyone have painted white cabinets that have held up?
Comments (39)With regard to Thermofoil option: Yikes! I have yet to see a high quality option. The product is basically a sheet of plastic, printed to look either like wood or a high gloss lacquer. The MDF or particle board door is shaped and then a heater is applied to shape the sheet of plastic over the top and around the sides of the face. It is cooled and cut off along the back edge. Any cabinet next to an oven or dishwasher, will have issues. Period. Over time the sides tend to delaminate and you will get lifting and loose looking edges. Eventually they rip. Trying to match one, if something breaks a door is very difficult and expensive. If your cabinet line offers a free touch up kit- that is wonderful! Just imagine that when your counter top is being installed, they accidentally bump a door face. This is not a warning of an inferior finish- it is a thoughtful manufacturer....See Moreenduring
