Should I remove wall cabinets for a larger island?

We currently have an L-shaped kitchen with a small island (36" x 55"). The space between the short end of the L and the island is tight (39" with fridge on wall). Given the size of our kitchen, I don't think there is a way to get around having a major appliance on that wall in the current layout. So 2 options I'm considering 1) shrink the island by 6" (36" x 49") to get more space between appliance and island (see pic one with oven on the wall at end of island) or 2) remove the short end of the L and extend the island by ~25". Then put the stove on the island (pic 2). Any thoughts or suggestions on something I'm missing?
