Should we remove 4'x2' kitchen island and insert tile underneath?

I'm sorry if this info is already posted, I searched and found nothing.

DH and I want to remove our 4x2' kitchen island and put a freestanding farm/work table there instead. This means the floor now under the island would show, and there is no tile there now, they tiled up to the edges of it. The tile is 12x12 and is laid on the diagonal. House is only three years old so we can still get the same tile. It is a "weathered" looking tile with "chipped" edges so I think it would be somewhat forgiving in the looks of putting new ones down.

The builder's tile company said they'd have to take out the tile all the way back to the wall to do this -- pretty much replace all the tile -- or else the lines would be crooked. This is not to mention the different dye lot.

Is he right about the lines not matching up? It seems like a very small area to have that happening.

I'm willing to live with a different dye lot, but not lines that don't match up!

Thanks!!
