How would you recommend doing window treatments for this room?

I am trying to figure out what kind of window treatments would be best for our living room for both walls (including those on either side of the fireplace). To the left of the photo is the kitchen and dining area. I can’t figure out what makes sense but will also look cohesive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Comments (23)This is the first (and only) time I have ever seen these things. I do attribute the reason that our children do not usually get up before 8 a.m. is b/c of how dark it keeps the room in the morning. In terms of taking them down and leaving them for the next owners - it's not that simple. They are made specifically for each window and the "rail" that the shade slides up and down in is attached to the jamb with a sort of high powered sticky tape. You pretty much render the thing useless if you remove the rail. The former owner was a big smoker and we didn't realize how much these absorbed the smell until we unrolled the one in our kitchen by our big glass sliding door -ewwww! that's when all the others came down. We managed to get the ones in the bedrooms off of the rail so that I could give them a good soak in the tub. I don't think I could change the fabric on the shade but if I can figure out a quick way to do the valance, I may do that and leave the rest up to the next owners....See MoreWindow treatment question-How would you dress this window?
Comments (23)Snbtwins, your best bet is decide the length of the rod, where you want the panels to start and stop. Since you are having the panels custom made, I would suggest you use that measurement to figure how many lengths or half lengths of fabric you want the panels to be. When I make panels I prefer them to be at least double the width they were cover. Since you will not be closing them, that would be from the edge inside edge of the window trim to the finial. Comments (9)Something to think about: If you go with the 6 x 6 window, and want it to open and not cost too much, it will probably have to be a sliding window with a vertical mullion up the middle. Or you could get fancy and more expensive with a fixed pane in the middle and single or double hung integrated windows on the sides. You didn't mention if you are getting wood, aluminum, or vinyl windows. If you go with the two 3 x 6 windows, they can be single or double hung with a horizontal mullion. Comments (31)I agree pattern is probably not the way to go with such tall narrow panels. A cream that goes with the rock could be pretty; possibly a gray. I suspect it would be tough to find a light blue that would go with the rock plus whatever else you want to use in the room. I find the varied height of the shades you mocked up distracting, and it looks like you'd have to do the lower height in the adjacent room as well. If you're set on having shades, maybe you can get a mock up of them all across at the level above the cornice. And the lower rod to correspond. If they're well lined it might not be obvious that the window on the far left actually has blank wall behind it. Good luck with your move!...See More
