Stunning! I agree with Jinx. I hope it does not go to someone who wants to made it "modern"

I get so upset when I see these lovely old homes renovated by knocking down loads of walls, painting everything gray and then moving in all of their black furniture. lol

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

When I was a kid[many years ago]I used to make mudpies. Loved to play in the dirt,climb rocks,ride wild horses.Was sort of a tomboy,no girls in my neighborhood. In jr. highschool they used to call me witch.Don't know why. Now it seems I'm doing a second childhood, playing in the mud.I like these results much better.My favorite project is, like sarasaid,the one I'm currently working. This one is a water feature.It is a sphere[two bowls,mortared together.with a cut out].Mounted on a pedestal cast from the same bowl mold.The pedestal has 4 semicircles cut out so it has legs, these legs have been fortilied to provide the strength to support the sphere. It will be painted black inside,hold water,with glass 'rocks' at the bottom and a floating candle in it. I have great hopes for it. Don't know if I should paint the outside or not. I'm still trying to learn my son's camera so I can't post pictures, maybe one day I can.

Well, we did a mini "refresh" on our kitchen in 1999 to add a dishwasher and standard-sized range, as we had one of those apartment-sized ranges that DH detested. When we did the mini refresh, we also changed countertops, sink & faucet, and we had put in peel and stick vinyl over the hideous gold linoleum when we first moved in. That being said, we still had issues with layout, with the only really useable countertop being the 15" to left of the range and 5" to the right of it. There was a small swath of countertop across from the stove, next to the sink, but because it was right by the back door, it became a catchall. When I took anything out of the oven, it pretty much had to go on the stovetop. Baking cookies just wasn't very fun after a while. I sorta stopped doing it. :^( Then there was the wall between the kitchen and livingroom that made the kitchen seem so dark and cramped. The lack of storage was the biggest issue we had. I still get the heebs when I think of that cabinet where the plastic storage containers lived. I don't know how many times I sat on the floor and cleaned out that blasted cabinet, just to have it heave out plasticware all over me the next time I opened that door. I'm pretty sure that DH would open the door *just enough* to throw an item in there. We had no venting over the range, instead we had a cabinet directly over the range, and it was lower than standard. When we did the remodel, we could see big black burn marks underneath. Lovely. Our garbage was located across the kitchen on the stairwell landing. If I had gunk in my hands, I had the pleasure of carrying it across the floor, leaving a nice little dribble trail. Fun times! The giant fluorescent light box, with that hideous tube light. I tried to "tart it up" at one point, but in the end, it was just a big rectangle with an ugly light, so it had to go. My peel and stick vinyl tiles, so wonderful and bright when we installed them, were pitted and cracking in places. No matter how long I scrubbed on my hands and knees, there were areas where the tile was worn, and the dirt was embedded. Yuck. The kitchen wasn't awful; it just was not a joy to work in. Now I enjoy baking and cooking in there, and putting away the tupperware is not an exercise in frustration! Hooray! Oh, happy day! :^)

I agree that a garage door is not a facade. And I agree that in a Victorian nieghborhood--or any neighborhood, the new or infill houses should engage the street in the Same Manner as the other houses on the street. But I think there is a difference between engagement and hostility. The Glessner House hardly engages the street but the facade is certainly interesting enough to interest one as you walk by. The thing that I don't like about the house in the original post is the relative blankness of the left, the strange ajar door, and the appearance of mildew--that provides a feeling of neglect. But when I think of my new house for example, the only way that the street could be engaged at all would be to set the house on the rear lot line and obliterate any possibility of a backyard. The front would not be particularly comfortable to use, because it would still be on the sidewalk. But the inside of the house is quite a surprise. Two complete walls of glass, two outdoor spaces in a neighborhood where one's outdoor space may be wide enough for a trashcan, and where most windows must be covered for privacy. In contrast there is ONE window in my entire house that absolutely needs to be covered for privacy (or decency's sake) The other large expanses of glass could go completely uncovered due to their placement. "I would not want to feel as though I had been institutionalized or incarcerated living in one of those concrete fortresses." I can't say that I really understand this comment because most of the houses we are talking about are mostly glass, and engage the outdoors more than a typical house, just not at the front door.

I thought the house was in pretty good shape too. I have no idea about the area at all .

The flooring looks great too. I would for sure change the paint colors but not to gray. :)

And yes, I imagine the price reflects the locale.

Why do the photos look so weird? Things are kind of blurry like someone was retouching a lot. The wall colors are mostly truly unfortunate, aren't they?

Wow, a grand old lady. Someone sure went crazy with the carpet and gold paint, but it looks loke it could be fixed up and look grand again with some love. The basement and the electrical system and hvac looked a bit scary though.

You had me at Indiana Limestone - those houses are rock solid - literally. Rushville isn't too far from Indianapolis. Lots of brightening in those photos.

The tile on the front terrace is gorgeous. This will have to be a labor of love, though. As low as the price is, it appears a bad investment for the location and the community.

I wouldn't knock down any walls, but I would much prefer to see those yellow/mustard walls painted gray instead of the colors they are now. I am also okay with black furniture - I much prefer that to brown.

My brother has had to go to Terre Haute on business, and he also described it as the middle of nowhere. I think Indiana's motto is "crossroads of America," which I translate to mean "middle of nowhere." I've had very good friends from Indiana, however, including roommates in college from Muncie. Dining options in Terre Haute were very limited, according to my brother, but it may have improved since he was there. He does not eat beef or pork.

I’ve only ever hauled horses through Indiana on the way to other states. I remember pretty countryside and IMS (very cool to see that).

The primary trouble with the area is its semi-remote location in the Rust Belt that's fallen to the opioid crisis. There are some quaint, lovely, safe small towns left in the Midwest, but you have to choose carefully and research local and county regulations, funding and resource allocation, like you would anywhere, I guess.

Those pics do look weird, doubt they are photos. Some look computer generated. Crazy what location does to price!!
