OK to transplant seedlings into pots w/Miracle Gro potting soil?
Comments (7)its a little early for my zone 5 ... to be putting out tender annuals ... so... work in the garage .. today .. and do one pot.. and see what happens to the babes in the next few days/weeks ... experiments are always better than the thoughts of peeps all over the country .... i presume you have a few to spare.. and if the media is so volatile that it will kill them.. i presume it will do so within the next 2 weeks.. until the last frost date ... so give it a go ..... ken...See MoreAir-Layering with Air-Pots
Comments (13)Murky, My figs are towering giants right now. I bet they are 12 or more feet tall. If you had asked me that same question in 2003 I would have jumped at it, as these root cups look like they cannot be improved upon. But I am just not airlayering anything these days. Back in 2003 I was using yogurt cups that I had first melted a hole in the center bottom, then cut with scissors down the side to that hole. Next I would fit it around the fig stem, and then duct tape the whole thing solid. After that I would fill the cup with some potting soil and keep it moist for a month or two. They rooted very nicely, best done in early June. The reason I even went to this extreme is because a friend from California had given me some potted figs that had severe nematode infestations, so this method was incorporated to give the clones disease free roots. Then junk the mother plants. Any more, my figs are so branch-prolific that I just take the more limber of the lower branches and weight them down with rocks of bricks to the ground, making superb fig-babies for whoever wants them. Right now I have plenty of Desert King and Negronne, if you know anyone that needs that sort....See MoreBaby Red Dragon Acer's - Air Pot size
Comments (2)No reason at all that young maple seedlings/saplings cannot be planted out........lord knows that's how they start when seeds germinate naturally from the mother tree! If you do choose to pot up for a season or two before planting out, you don't want to get too carried away with increasing pot size - just the next size up. Can't see exactly how large the pots are now, but if equivalent to a 1G, then up-sizing to a 2G is fine. Make sure you use a really good quality and very durable potting soil if you choose to pot up. No cheap stuff and no very fine, excessively moisture retentive mix like Miracle Gro. Are these babies grafted?...See MoreRe-potting into Air Pots
Comments (21)You have to up size your pot slowly to get the fibrous roots you want by the time your tree in in its final pot regardless of your soil mix. The 5-1-1 mix Is the best mix for tree root health regardless of how big the pot is for any size tree. It is also the citrus trees best friend. You can't go wrong. My tree are all going in ground outside so I don't want a fibrous root structure . I want a spreading root structure. That is why I went from a 1 gallon container to a 5 gallon and to a 30 gallon and into the ground. By up-potting in small jumps you will have a fibrous root system that will let you lift the tree out of its pot and clip any root/roots that are wrapping up until you need to up-size to a larger pot. Let Mike add more. He has 10 years more experience than I. My goal was to make my trees grow like a weed from very small to too big to handle in one year instead of 3 years as most do. I used bucket lights and a hot/light box to achieve this. Most citrus'er find it's to much hassle. It did jump me from seed sprouts to 9-12 feet of linear twig growth per tree in the first year. 1 year old Sweetlee tangerine tree from seed sprout in bucket lights then grow box over winter. Inside the buckets with a bucket light over head. The grow box came next What I did wrong for potted citrus. 1) I up sized the containers way to fast with to big of jump in pot size regardless of mix. 2) My soil mix is very very heavy that requires vacuuming excess water and aerating often. 3) Grew trees from seed when I should have bought grafted trees I was wanting. What I did different was the strange lighting systems that jumped me forward 3 years of growth in one year.
