Seriously? You are out $200. You don't want the item you ordered. But, you are still considering paying another $600 for it?

Lose the 200 and find another reason to spend the 600 on something you actually need.

Personally, I would cancel the order and accept the $200. I wouldn't wait and "refuse" delivery. That somehow seems unfair to the store. Even if they can return the cabinet to the manufacturer, it is effort on their part that could be used to service one of their other customers.

However, if I WANTED the cabinet, even if I didn't NEED it, I might get it anyway. So only you can decide if your WANT for the cabinet is worth the additional $600.

If I could find a beautiful barrister's bookcase for a reasonable price, I'd problem get it even though I have nowhere to put it!

I would take the loss rather than spend an additional $600 to bring unwanted crap into my home. And I don't mean the furniture is crap but just that anything that isn't functional to me or beautiful to look at is crap because it doesn't enhance my life and actually is a burden as it sits reproachfully taking up space.

I am coming for a place where I squeezed in a bunch of furniture inherited from my mother and grandmother because I felt I had to give it a home and it is only recently that I was able to release the pieces that were occupying space. It is easier for me to never bring stuff home than to get rid of it - although if I can find a person who actually wants or needs it, I am overjoyed to give it away.

However if you ordered fairly recently there is a good possibility that you would be able to negotiate a credit if they cancelled the order. I ordered two chairs for my balcony last week and they are scheduled for nine months delivery time.

You know, after I typed it out and came back later to re-read, it does sound stupid, doesn't it? Good idea to ask if I can use my deposit toward something else.

Or, you could finish paying for the cabinet, get it, then take your chances on selling it to someone else. Hopefully for more than $600.

You wouid never get anyone to purchase used furniture even if cimpletely new for retail price.

There are economic theories supportijg how difficult it is for people to accept sunk economic loss even when spending more money makes no sense.

GO in person, ask nicely........say you made a mistake. Spend 300/400 on something you really like, or really need.

Often this is a very amenable solution, especially if the item has not yet shipped.

The item has not shipped and sounds like it will be MONTHS before it does. Go to the store have that discussion on cancelling the order. I would not leave w/o my $200 in form of a credit at the least. In the future put the deposit on a credit card, cancelling the order with full refund is easily managed through the credit card company. NEVER EVER pay cash for such transactions. This is why credit cards were invented!!!

Read your receipt. Deposits exist for a reason. To be fair, this is probably noted where you signed the order form. You need not get huffy about it. It does in fact, protect the store. Independent designers don't order without deposits either.

Seriously, you would want a return of "at the least" your deposit for your own change of mind? And the money the credit card "refunds" you doesn't get pulled out of a hat...they get it back from the vendor. So much for taking any responsibility for your own actions.

Note: Don’t do business with arcy_gw. This is NOT why credit cards were invented and the credit card company won’t refund your money unless you can show that the vendor violated the agreement. OP should do as others say - check the terms, talk to the store, try to find a reasonable solution. Worst case - eat the $200 and move on.

No, I wouldn't get the cc company involved -- I put the deposit down and understand the consequences of changing my mind.

I do have another open order with them already for a kitchen table and chairs. I think it's a very good suggestion to ask if I can cancel the order for the file cabinet and put the money toward the balance due on the table and chairs. It's worth a shot.

Honestly, I don't think they'll bat an eye about cancelling an order. The guy mentioned that people are waiting so long for their furniture that when it finally comes in they refuse delivery, the shop puts it on the floor and poof! it's gone just like that, it flies off the sales floor.

I've been aware cancellation or delivery refusal is an option all along, it's the loss of the $200 that's my main issue. Admittedly, I didn't think of asking that the $200 be put toward my other order -- so see? It's good to talk (type) things out to tap other people's thought processes.

You say the delivery is months out...have you tried calling on the order, asking again for the delivery date, and when you are told, say that it is too long to wait and please cancel the order. It won't hurt to remind them you are still a customer.
