The plant has no real drainage. No wonder the poor thing has flowered only once in 13 years. They have to water it sparingly. The other plants inside the store front are Aglaonema and Philodendron which appear to be growing fine. It's truly a case of plant torture on the vine. The Pandorea should go outdoors in summer. It's not receiving enough sunlight.

Apparently nepetoides would be extremely rare here if at all but I will keep my eyes open for scrophulariifolia. I really like being made aware of these natives. I need to get out more!

It has been a long while, but I remember the white berries didn't have any blue, and were larger in size and had a different flavor. If the white part was rubbed off (not easily done), or the berry opened (easier), the skin was not colored. There were blue berries that did form a whitish film, but they were obviously blue underneath. Bushes were consistent in which color berries they formed year after year. The largest plants always seemed to be of the dark-berried type, but that could have been a coincidence. My observations spanned many years, but I had no formal botanical education at that time. The area burned in several wildfires, and I have not revisited where the light colored berry bushes were seen. But since the discussion was continuing, I thought I'd add my recollections. If blackrab is willing to share a more detailed description of the location, it may be possible for me to check the plant she photographed during a future trip to San Diego County. Of course, the birds may have eaten them all or something, but throwing it out there as a possibility. I have a trip planned in 2 weeks, but I will have other people along, and don't know where the location of the plant is in conjunction to where I will be going.

According to this article "Diversifolia" dates back to 1789(!) and is described as a “tree with narrow-oval crown, leaves 14-18 cm long, mostly consisting of an enlarged terminal leaflet only, but often with a small pair (of leaflets) beneath or with only one. Since open pollinated seedlings of this selection will possess various leaf types similar to the parent, many trees now called ‘Diversifolia’ are probably not the original cultivar, but rather segregates from open pollination of the original.” The same article also lists the single leaved variety Hessei which apparently originated in Germany (Hesse Nursery) in the 1930’s. Back in the 70’s and 80’s Hessei was occasionally planted as a street tree here in the Midwest, and I’ve come across it a number of times over the years (prior to EAB).
