What To Do With a Small Bathroom Ceiling

So I have a couple of small bathrooms that have no windows, so I decided to lean into that darkness of the space. All the walls, including the shower walls, will be dark grey wall panels , 18in x 24in, that mimic cement (see picture of tile). The vanity will be a high gloss dark grey. The floor will be a lighter lvp that flows seamlessly from every room in the condo (sample piece of flooringand tile). The ceiling will... well I'm not sure about the ceiling 🤔. I was planning on taking the wall tile and placing it on the ceiling. This was supposed to make the walls seem taller so the space would look larger, but I thought it might also feel too heavy as the tiles are more matte. Originally I was planning on doing a high gloss dark grey ceiling to bounce light around the space. Any thoughts??? 😬

From what I have read over the years ceilings painted white tend to look higher. White ceilings can also bounce and spread light, especially from an upturned fixture. Using the same color or material for walls and ceilings creates a united whole. White reflects most of the light that hits it, whereas gray reflects less. While glossy surfaces reflect more clearly, a glossy surface doesn't reflect more light than a dull surface of the same color.

A metallic treatment (wallpaper or silver leaf) might be fun.

I hadn't thought about a wall mounted sink at all! I'd like something more traditional looking than the Jazz but it's definitely an option. With some quick googling, I found the Duravit 1930. It's only 14.5" deep! Thanks again. :)

What order of tasks to re-do a small bathroom?

Sorry to be repetitive, but to confirm my understanding, I typed out a plan and I have a couple of questions. 1: Demo: remove toilet, tiled tub surround, floor, vanity doors, leave vanity base in place, remove doors and drawers. Some of this I'll do myself and some will be done my the plumber's demo person. 2: Rough Plumbing: Plumber 3: Rough Electrical: Electrician 4: Tile: Tile the tub surround and the floor. I want tiler to do work before painter because the painters are more careful/less messy than the tiler. Will that be okay? 5: Cabinetry: Reface cabinet with new doors/drawers. Cabinet-maker has already taken measurements for these, just hasn't made them yet. 6: Counter: Remove counter and sink. Install new counter and sink. The person putting the counter in said they would remove old one and the sink as part of the install fee. Is this task in the right place? 7: Plumbing: Install new toilet, faucets, new showerhead, and tub filler. Is this the right place for the new toilet to be installed? 8: Drywall, paint: Fix drywall, paint walls, trim, vanity, ceiling, mirrir frame. 9: Install knobs, towel bars, TP holder, new light fixture: I will do. Have I missed anything? Is anything in the wrong order? Thank you!!

One large bathroom or two small bathrooms?

In the picture, black is the current layout. Green is the change if only shower was made bigger and one door would be eliminated. Red is a complet demo, removing the wall section between two toilets. All the water lines from upstairs are in the section of the wall that is between two toilets so removing this wall would require a major move of water lines to the side and there would have to be a section of wall kept behind new toilet and vanity. The door from master would have to be framed and move to the left as a pocket or barn door. The drowing is disproportionate. It is all very cramped in there Current shower is only 26"x26". But may be replacing vanity for a wall hung vanity in the larger bathroom would change the feel. It will all have to be torn down and replaced including removing subfloors as they are rotten. So either remodel will be a lot of work. What should we do?

If they would each be the size of the standard 5x7 bath that used to serve as the only full bath in the house, and it has no negative affect on your budget to have another or negative effect on the bedroom size it would be fine to have two individual baths. If they would end up being cramped or shrinking the bedroom, maybe not. It's not so much that smaller bathrooms are that much more difficult to use, it's that they are a pain to clean. You could also do one ensuite and one hall access...and by the time the older one leaves the younger could move into that bedroom. I would not do a single Jack and Jill or the two sink thing. There are differing parenting styles too, and I know some parents more or less stay out of their teenage kids rooms, so it's possible that ensuite bathrooms in that situation would get really dirty. I once stayed overnight in a guest room last minute that was jack and jill with a kid's bedroom, (kid home) and they had me use the ensuite bathroom in a different kid's bedroom who was gone over that night or two. And the ensuite bathroom was not exactly filthy, but it was not clean or taken care of by a long shot. And they didn't know because they stayed out of their kid's rooms.

Just paint the ceiling, you have an infinite choice of colors that will be quick and inexpensive to apply.

We remodeled this bath a few years ago and I didn’t want to walk into a room that blinded me in the middle of the night or before I was wide awake in the morning. (I put the vanity lights on a dimmer too) I also replaced the old crappy builder grade fan to one with 100 CFM and it has an LED light that could illuminate a large stadium, so I painted the ceiling dark grey. It does not make the room feel small. It actually makes the ceiling sort of disappear, so it really feels a bit taller now. The color is Behr “Imperial Gray”. I did ours in a flat paint. In our case the white tile, window, glass doors and lights still make it plenty bright, but your tiles may not. I don’t think gloss paint will help in that respect. See if you can increase your reflective surfaces in a different way. Perhaps glass or mirrors? Better lighting?

The big issue in a dark bathroom is the lighting needs to be beyond awesome so LEDs 4000K for sure as for the ceiling the same color as the walls does in fact make the ceiling feel higher since there is no visual break . You could do a good light over the vanity and also a fan light that is a bit more muted with a frosted shade.for night time visits.
