Design Dilemma Paint Exterior

What stucco paint color will look best with tan brick?

I would like to help my parents update their home’s exterior paint color. The brick is light tan and the roof, when not covered in snow, is brown. I am wondering if a darker, bolder front door color would look better. I also think the stucco and shutters lack impact and am wondering if a darker beige with a hint of brown or green might look nice next to the brick? Thank you for any suggestions!

I agree that the exterior paint and trim color looks too yellow with the brick. A gray green would probably be good. Are the front doors blue?

Yes, they are light blue and I think a darker color or white would be better?

You could try it without shutters, if that is allowed. If not, black Or sage green Either would be beautiful :) I'm sorry I don't have specific colours to suggest.

Nice home. Would not paint the brick. The shades-of-brown roof you have works with the brick but so would a shades-of-gray colored roof. If the roof color is the one that will stay, you might consider painting the fascia and gutter a shade of brown color common to both brick and roof. Might consider some landscaping changes. You can make the front entry of your home its focal point rather than the surrounding brick. You could add pavers to outline your sidewalk and/or plant low growing plants, such as liriope (if it grows well in your planting zone) to outline one or both sides of your sidewalk. If you use stone or faux stone for the outline pavers, you could continue that look around the entry door. Rather than paint the brick at the entry, you could cover the brick beneath your portico or porch immediately around the door with siding or a faux stone to get a look you find appealing. Strategically placed shrubs and hedges can minimize the visual impact of an exterior wall with less potential for damaging the house. Large trees too close to the ho use can result in root damage to the foundation or having the tree or its limbs. During the cold weather of winter is the time to move trees ... when the sap is down -- to save any you move with your new landscaping -- but in a new location. Will Aucuba bushes, which keep their leaves and look good year round, grow well in your planting zone? Good luck with your curb appeal efforts. Do post after pics.

I know how you feel! My brick is a similar color. I moved from a white and bright cape cod. I came to the realization that bright and cherry was never going to be my house so I'm going for moody and sexy...that can be a house right? Ha. Anyhow, absolutely stay away from a red undertone brown! The original owners did that to mine and it looks awful. I like what you have currently. What I would update, though, is your front door and larger light fixture to make it feel more inviting. The door is very ornate for the clean lines of your house. I would also add some color through landscaping like the ever popular hydrangea bush. With that large tree there, hydrangea endless summer and azaleas do well in shade.

I love the current color of the stucco, but then, I love the creamy stucco colors. I would definitely do a brighter color for the doors but I love the colors on this house's shutters- which looks to be similar color to the door on your parent's house.

I'm hoping one of the great color pro's will chime in here. I'm thinking a cool white would be a safe bet on the windows and trim. IMO I would start by painting the stucco in a cooler tone. Then decide on the door, which is a pretty blue right now. Because the door is shaded by the porch, it should either be a bright-ish color, as it is now, or a dramatically dark color.

I think mimimomy's blue shutter idea is perfect for your home. And I'd suggest a charcoal color for your door. That way, 95% of your exterior is neutral but with a pop of sky blue.

Thanks for all of these great ideas. I do like the idea of a mostly neutral house with a pop of color. My mom just told me she always liked the idea of a yellow front door. So how about something like this (that I just found elsewhere on Houzz)! Pretend the “siding” in the color swatch is close to the brick color. Then shutters in a darker neutral shade with a yellow door?
