Laminate: Regrets, or none?
Comments (43)Depends on a few things. How much is your house? In your area, do houses in your price range have laminate, or is hardwood standard? how big is your dog? how old is your dog? how crazy is your dog? would you clean a spill up quickly and how often would you spill? when are you planning on reselling the house? ask your realtor if laminates would be a bad thing for your house. you can do laminate now, then in a few years, if it isnt suiting you, replace it. if it is, then you saved a bunch of money and are happy. we have a 2 yr old 100lb lab, she is VERY rough on the floors, but the laminate has zero scratches, and the hardwood trim is getting a beating. when she gets startled or looses traction... out come the nails. If we had hardwoods, we would have to refinish the floors before we sell the house, no doubt, so we would have had to triple our flooring budget, AND refinish before we moved! some laminate can be as expensive as hardwood, installation is also a very different in price, so do what fits your budget. We liked the color for the cheapest lam lowes had, we couldnt be happier. if it was the same price, of course hardwood is the only option, but it wasnt. that is precisely why laminates were created. laminate is also a little softer for falling babies. we have a 4 month old and real hardwoods or tile would give me anxiety attacks everyday, and she cant even crawl yet. in the end, it is what you like. 5-10 years down the line, you can rip it up and start over if you like, but do get a better pad, that makes a difference....See MoreFad recycling
Comments (7)Kathy, I just pull off all the celery leaves & be sure not to have any stems, just the leaves(stems, even small ones don't dry well) I throw them in a colander run cold water over them while I mix them around little with my hand. Drain & dump on paper towels or absorbant terry dishtowel & when you can't see any moisture spread out on foil.Tend to turn very dark brown if wet. Should look light green with a few light brownish when dry. I have gas oven so I turn it on long enough to heat bottom metal & turn off oven & THEN place the foil on the metal bottom of oven, if you are in a hurry you can remove them in 30 mins & reheat (only takes couple of min.) Then TURN OFF & put in again. Sometimes I do this 3 times total.I've also put oven on at lowest setting & put the foil up on top shelf for 5-15 min. that's at 150%.Have to watch! They will be crisp & crumble when cool. Then I just breakup some & dump(make a v in foil to pour them into plastic snack bag. Put in 2nd ziplocbag, label & store in fridge. Good in all stews, soups, sauces, anything you want a celery flavor in. Well, I use celery seed in potato salad if I don't have fresh celery which I prefer. Talk of recycling GF actually carefully folds each plastic bag & gets it about 4 in sq & pops it in a large Kleenix type box.I think she said she could get 500 in 1 box but not sure! Is it ever neat at a yard sale, you just pull 1 out shake & put the items customer bought in it. I always have bags & even buy a few marked down bags of toys & wash them up so that I have toys for babies to teens. Parents & grandmas love it that the toys are washed & sealed in plastic bag with masking tape. Don't make any money but teaching lot of kids how to shop & make purchases & lots of happy smiles as they walk away with their "treasures" The parents are happy as kids looking at bags for them on their round plastic tablecloth on driveway & parents buy more as kids arn't whining. Been known to ask parent if fussy little one can have a cracker also!!OK, Yes I've had lot of YS & I have tons of stuff from an older lady that will call & tell me the closet pole broke, I go over & she starts giving me stuff like trunkfuls Then her roof leaked & they had to put new roof on, garage wasn't leaking but needed to match rest of roof so I ended up taking 9 carloads home. She isn't as much of a shopaholic as she used to be but sure got me through some lean days before I got on widow's benefits. With downturn tho people want things almost free!!Strange as TS prices just keep going up!! Oh, what does she give me besides clothes, well, new in box stuff, great for gifts, lots of expensive makeup(I take what I want &sell the rest) down comforters,King size sets for a bed, shoes(size 7-my size)fancy candle holders, pots & pans, tablecloths & napkin sets, musical Santa, angel, dolls. She gives me xmas paper & tags, suitcases, duffle bags, purses, belts etc. Any money over few cents in change I give back to her. I don't have much good stuff to sell right now except new sweaters & we are both small size 8 or 6 depending on company she got it from. She shops catalogs,QVC etc & other shopping channel. My house is looking like her house!! Drowning in good stuff but how can you say no to stuff I never in my life would buy. Now I live in jeans,GV has some great ones,Jones of NY. Some "wild" things I cut the beads off of & used on crafts!! Jan...See Moreall I see on GW is white cabinets, but I'll have dark ones
Comments (27)In 1977 we installed very dark wood cabinets in an old lake house we were remodeling to be a year-round residence. I loved them for a lot of years, but by 2001, when we decided to tear down and rebuild on the same lot, I simply couldn't do a dark wood kitchen again! I struggled for weeks until I saw a white kitchen I loved. I'd never considered paint: "Wood should be seen!" but we did the white kitchen and loved it. We moved in 2008 and rebuilt. I would have reproduced exactly the 2001 kitchen if I could have, but neither the cabinets nor the countertops were available. I realized I wasn't tired of white, so we did a different white, and added a charcoal island. The two-tone look may be outdated quickly, but this kitchen is for ME, not for some style guru. Follow your heart! And realize that you'll always be second-guessing . . . because there are so many truly lovely choices out there!...See Moredoes anyone regret buying SS appliances?
Comments (39)Just want to add my 2 cents to the "is SS on the way out?" debate. Basically, anyone currently in the market for a kitchen appliance (as I just was) can't help but recognize that there is no more ubiquitous element in late 20th/early 21st century kitchens than SS appliances. It therefore seems reasonable to assume that its days are numbered, that it will soon be rejected en masse, thus rendering all those SS-featuring kitchens out-dated, even the one I am just redoing now, dang it! But here's what I decided. It seems like the trend right now is toward "classical" -- i.e. least ornate, least pretentious, least gimmicky, most functional, timeless, etc -- hence the proliferation of elements that have been in kitchens for decades, even centuries -- white subway tile, straight-edged soapstone counters, hardwood floors, no-nonsense appliances (metal), etc. So if you go with any of those choices, you are basically joining a trend that is about rejecting trendiness! Paradox! All that to say that I don't think you can put those things, including SS, in the same category as avocado or harvest gold. The former have no pretensions other than functionality, and that is what makes them so super-cool-looking. And that is what makes them timeless. End of speech. As far as scratches and dings go, my 3-year-old well-used JennAir fridge has none, but the fingerprints and smudges are ever present. FWIW....See MorePaul F.
