Design Dilemma Kitchens Flooring

Tile direction — HELP!!!

We are remodeling our kitchen and laundry room. Will be using the same 12x24 tile in both. No threshold. We’d like it to run seamlessly together. Here is a sketch of our layout. I thought tile should run left to right if you are looking into the room from a door way but I have 3 doorways leading to the kitchen so it will look horizontal in one doorway but vertical if coming from another doorway. Also the laundry room will be the opposite direction because of where the entryway is. I hope that makes sense. I’m not sure if there is a design rule to follow. Please help!

No design rule, just make sure they're all going same direction :) I feel like my gut prefers up and down for this design, but I can't for the life of me explain why

Ummm, not sure it’s pertinent, but which way will the wood run in the other rooms? I’m not qualified to answer that; just wonder if it’s a factor that the pros here will help with.

A stacked pattern can accentuate the linear qualities of the room. Stacked tile can draw the eye from wall-to-wall, A diagonal pattern can open things up a bit. Diagonal can fool the eye into thinking a narrow room is less narrow, for example, by drawing the eye from corner-to-corner, which is a longer distance than wall-to-wall. Best bet would be to draw a floor plan, make a few copies of it, then sketch in your proposed tile patterns. Here's a link to the first hit I got. I have wood flooring laid on the diagonal and love the look of it. I think with your floor plan it would be a great solution to not having it look wrong in one room or the other. Here is how my floor looks going from my great room area to the kitchen/dining area. I have the wood floor on the diagonal for both connecting hallways too. The required clearance to combustible materials for this gas fireplace/heater is 1/2" at the rear and sides and 0" at the floor. There is a noncombustible zone about a foot high above the metal frame of the glass and a few inches to the sides. The manufacturer's installation instructions say: "If installing Tiles or Faux Rock, first install a ÃÂ½Ã¢ÂÂ thick (minimum) Cement Board (Hardibacker or Durock Brand) over the face of the fireplace and framing members. Follow by applying Thinset mortar (no polymer additives) using ÃÂ¼Ã¢ÂÂ square notched trowel on the cement board surface. Finally, install tile to reach a finish material depth of 1 inch." "If installing Marble or Granite slabs as fascia materials, specify that the inner edges that will be adjacent to the Glass Door are polished ... Attach Marble or Granite slabs to face of unit and to drywall surface using adhesive that does not offgas when hot." I'm going to guess that the problem is some kind of plastic in the backing or setting materials behind the cladding that off-gases or softens from the heat of the fireplace. If this model has heating blowers in it, that might also contribute to the problem. Typical building codes requires that factory-build gas fireplaces be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and so should your contract. I would use the same flooring for the kitchen as what you have in the rest of the house and then you only need to worry about the laundry space I actully really dislike tile floors in kitchens they are hard on knees, feet and backs so I never do them

What does the tile you are planning to use look like? Does it have a directional pattern?

I'm with Patricia, tile in a kitchen is pain waiting to happen.

Also, I had forgotten how easily things break when you drop them on tile (I have Marmoleum) until I visited my mom. Dropped some simple plastic thingy and it was completely obliterated.

@Anna (6B/7A in MD) and @Patricia Colwell Consulting - I can't use the same laminate wood floor in the kitchen and laundry room. It's just not an option but thank you for your suggestion.

@Skippack Tile & Stone, it is variated in color depending on the piece you are looking at (grayish, beige and sorta bronze) which goes well with our rustic wood (laminate floor in the opposite room and hall. No pattern. 12 x 24 in size. I will add a photo to the post. Thank you!

The patterned tile is in the bathroom and the wood is in our dining room, hall way and rest of the downstairs which bumps up to the kitchen tile. The 3 tile samples are 12x24 and believe it or not, are all the same tile. Some more more gray, with bronze and some are more bronze/beige with dark and light gray. The wood floor is running up and down in the hall and dining room. I was going to run the kitchen/laundry room tile in the opposite direction which would be left to right facing the kitchen window.
