Easing those long, cold, dark days of winter

Easing those long dark days? Here’s what I do to help until the daylight hours go longer. What do you do?

I buy bunches of those, small candles and put one in a very safe glass container away from anything flammable.

Bake a few cookies or bread for friends or city hall, or office visits.

I buy a few sets of those soft white LED lights for one of our large windows, and a small battery set for the kitchen door window or twig wreath. I used to put electric candles in each window, but they’re packed away in the attic still and I don’t feel like dealing with cords and plugs. You can buy the simple LED battery operated ones that “learn“ when to come on and shut off. Those are nice. Cats like to knock these over.

Natural fragrance such as balsam, orange peel, clove, allspice and nutmeg help.

Outside we put a few strings of lights and a grown-from-seed southern balsam that is now about 15 foot high. It looks great with large colored lights. Nice to see when arriving home.

Give some time to turning off any television or news or radio and put on some beautiful music. I have my cooking music CDs (Graceland), but listening to beautiful piano, choral, opera, or jazz is a soothing respite from a crazy world.

Stay in touch with family and freinds, avoid those in propaganda bubbles.

I recently hung a bird feeder from our bedroom window 30 plus feet up — chickadees, nuthatch cardinals, goldfinch and no squirrels.

The daylight will start lengthening soon, but we usually don’t notice a difference until February when our window geraniums send forth new blooms.

What do you guys do?
