Camellia with brown bumps under leaves

Hello! I purchased a Christmas carol camellia from the home Depot back in September. Shortly after receiving it the leaves started getting large brown spots on the tops and these light brown rigid bumps on the bottom. Any ideas on what this is and how to treat it?. There are many buds on the plant that just aren't opening. Not sure if they should already be opening and if these spots are causing the plant to not bloom.

Yep, sounds like you have a bad infestation of scale. Personally, I would probably start over, It takes time and diligence to get rid of them ALL and it sounds like you have a lot! When you think you have finally gotten rid of them all, in a week they can be back in full force again because you missed some. Easy to do! The ones your seeing are under the brown bump is their protective covering, others could still be in the crawler stage and they are almost transparent and very tiny, they are the ones you can't see. Soapy water, or alcohol mixed with water are a couple ways to try and get rid of them, also, your finger nail could scrape them off as well. The sticky stuff is honeydew they secrete after sucking out the juice from the plants leaves. Nasty critters! Billy Rae

Yes, Pear Leaf Blister Mite. Especially this time of year. The pink turns to brown later. I got rid of them on one of my trees by completely defoliating it in late summer. Not exactly helpfult to the tree but all of the mites will be gone. They all reside in the leaves and only retreat to the buds in Fall before the leaves fall off. Take away the leaves and it's "buh-bye" to the mites.

It could. That is how I found out that my sprinkler had been turned off (when we had a rainy spell). I just forgot to turn it back on. Sometime during a dry spell in winter, I noticed that a Kanjiro had dry and browned out leaves. Checking the soil, I noticed it was dry and then discovered the sprinkler was off. Oops. The shrub recovered of course.

I concur. They are getting too much water. The buds will open when the plant variety deems that it is appropriate. Many Camellia japonicas will start to bloom anywhere from December to March/April. Cold temps may also cause it to temporarily stop opening blooms and start again a few weeks later. Regarding oedema, water less frequently during winter if the soil remains moist and there is enough rainfall to maintain the soil moist to a depth of 4". Once oedema has occurred, the affected leaves should not be picked off. If outdoor plants show signs of oedema, check the soil for waterlogging and improve the soil texture by incorporating organic matter such as leaf mould. For plants growing in permanent containers, decrease watering and try to improve drainage by using bigger drainage holes, new pots or repotting with new potting mix, if necessary. I have observed leaf damage similar to picture to #2 in some japonicas that get too much sun (they should get shade by 10-11am).

@rhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7 and @luis_pr, thanks so much for the info! I have moved the plant to not get so much rainfall and so I can control the moisture better. I thought the second picture might have been due to the sun so I did move it to a shadier spot. The side of the house it is on only gets morning sun from about 7-12 but the new spot will only see a couple hours within that time. I'm excited to see it bloom! I do see one bud getting rather large and red so hopefully it'll open up !

Temperatures are ”relative”. In the summer, japonicas do not like noon sunlight here.
