Whether or not to match or complement depends on many factors (size of kitchen, number of cabinets, the overall feel of your kitchen etc.) But for what it is worth, I like kitchens in which there is some contrast between the floor and the cabinets. I've seen many pretty kitchen lately in which the cherry cabinets are almost an exact match for the wood floors. It creates an almost "womb"-like effect -- one feels engulfed in the same tone of wood. This isn't a bad look -- but I would prefer a bit more contrast to set off the floor and cabinets.

Your kitchen sounds lovely! I am using quartersawn white oak on my cabinets and I think you will love the rift sawn (I was torn between QS and rift sawn, both are beautiful and so different from the oak cabs I took out). With your floors being red oak, they are trying to pull warmer/redder. Are your cabinets red or white oak? I lean toward weathered oak stain because I like the warmth it gives. Your floors are likely plain sawn and just the cabs are rift sawn? That will impact how the stain looks as well. First things first: PAINT with WHITE PRIMER. Yes. Just get the walls READY for a new colour. Primer is SUPER cheap and SUPER USEFUL. It gets the walls ready for the EXPENSIVE paint...without pay for expensive paint+primer. Once you have the yellow walls covered you will see the REAL colour of the house. The kitchen really needs to have the yellow taken off the walls. And get the tiles off the backsplash. The other SINGLE option: new counter top. But I would only decide on that once I had gotten all the warm tones off the walls. For me the biggest issue for the house is the tile-like flooring. I'm hoping they are vinyl...that would make for an easy removal. If they are real tile...they will be expensive to remove and deal with. But first things first: cover your yellow walls with white primer. You will be amazed at how different the wood looks when it is not being washed with more yellow.

I read so much about designing a kitchen, that after awhile it drives you a bit crazy❣️Designers usually say if you have lighter lower cabinets, then pick a darker flooring so they are “grounded”. And, if you have darker lower cabinets, then pick a lighter flooring to “ground “ them. I think: choose the flooring and cabinets that you love together. I have medium oak flooring and gray cabinets. I chose them because I liked the look. I have all stainless steel appliances and it is real easy and quick to clean them, not an issue for me.
