Santo. Here in New Mexico we are heavily influenced by our three distinct historical cultures: Native American, Cowboy, and Hispanic. “Santo” is the Spanish word for “saint”, and these wonderful, carved santo statues are are very common here. This one here on my living room coffee table is San Miguel (St. Michael, the Archangel).

Stromatolites at Hamelin Pool, Shark Bay, Western Australia

Stromatolites are basically microbial mats formed by the interaction of microorganisms like cyanobacteria with sedimentary materials, which build up in layers over centuries. They're not very photogenic, are they? But they are incredibly important in the development of the earth as we know it: first, because they represent one of the earliest forms of life on earth, dating back 3.5 billion - yes, billion - years; and second, because they produced oxygen which, over time, increased the atmospheric levels to a point capable of supporting more complex life forms. Stromatolites are rare today, found only in a few spots on the planet, with this colony in WA one of the largest and most diverse.

And something a little more picturesque - a Spinifex Pigeon

Cool stuff JMM, as I understand it the original oceans were so saturated with dissolved iron that they were green in color until the Stromatolites came along. As they oxygenated the water over those billions of years the oceans eventually turned blue. The oxygen "rusted out" the iron over time into the sediments creating much of today's iron ore.
