I got some Repels All and put around them and I also got some garden staples to hold them down so the deer won't knock them over when they walk through the bed. I will take these off when their roots grow. I hope the Repels All keep the other things away too. I have squirrels and gophers. The squirrels haven't bothered them yet (too many pine nuts for them to eat I guess)but the gopher ate two of my older iris. Came right through the wire my husband laid down. I'll let you know how it goes. I will be getting more iris later. I am planning on lining the outside of my fenced garden area with them. I am going to lay down smaller sized chicken wire and then put the garden mix I order by the truck load right on top of it. I will lay soaker hoses out because you have to water iris here in California to get them to bloom. Especial now when we are in a drought. I love el nino years here because I get the best Iris blooms then and they stay around longer.

Slooooooooooow cooked turkey - anyone done this?

I once cooked a turkey all night. Started it about 11 PM at 420 for 45 minutes, then turned the oven down to 200 without opening the door. I was awakened about 4 by the smell of turkey cooking....and couldn't really get back to sleep. By 10 the turkey was falling apart, but we weren't going to eat before one and then was when the rest of the family would come. So I left the turkey in the 200 oven. By dinner time the legs were separated from the body as were the wings and the breast was stringy and over done....it was impossible to carve nicely. I wouldn't even consider doing that again....but no one got sick...the turkey just wasn't very good. I did it to avouid having to get up at 5:30 or so to have to get the turkey into the oven....but Iw as awake at that hour any way because the smell of cooking turkey woke me. Now if I need to get a turkey done in a hurry, I crank the temperature of the oven. The turkey tastes and looks better and I think it';s safer. Linda c

Thanks, Linda. I do know how to bend and break a chicken joint. I do have poultry shears. I am even willing to buy a new blade for DH's hack saw, if need be. I think I can do this! I just watched a You Tube video of someone attempting to spatchcock a turkey. Instead of cutting on each side of the backbone, the guy took a saw and sawed through the backbone!

Ok - I have to weigh in on the wonders of a turkey roasted in an old fashioned roaster. The separate 'appliance' that sits on your counter and roasts only the turkey. My mom and my aunt both had one and we had GREAT turkey every time. I never gave it much thought until I had to become the Hostess of Thanksgiving. I struggled for several years with that giant turkey in a too small oven for everything else and the timing and juggling for oven space... About ten years ago I spied one at Home Depot for 29$ it came with an electric carving knife. Done. Best thing I've ever bought. I don't even have a thermometer. Moist, flavorful, with crispy skin. I do not stuff but do a similar prep as the Martha one. Everyone raves. Of course they are probably just being nice but when they ask for turkey leftovers I kinda believe them. And everybody keeps coming to our house... Best part is I have plenty of room in the oven for everything else.

LOL yes, Molly wouldn't sit on the chair but I didn't want her left out! I got a picture of her on a different sofa where she was more comfortable and she was added in.
