Akadama for roses potting mix?

Hi everyone,
I am buying supplies to prepare for the arrival of my bare root roses. I use potting soil I can find here (Malta) and usually add even more perlite, as well as sand and small pumice. I'd say I use 70% what's in the bag and 30% other stuff.
Some of the ingredients people recommend in this forum, such as turface and bark fines, are not available where I live. I do want my potting mix to retain some water, but I want good aeration too, especially in these large pots (20-30 liters)
Yesterday at the store I saw they had akadama on sale.
Is this stuff any good to add to a potting mix like what I described above?
I looked around online and some people seem to praise it, while others say it breaks down into clay easily when wet.
If I add it to my roses soil mix is it just going to turn into patches of clay after a few waterings? Some say a bit of clay in rose soil isn't bad, but I am unsure if that is true in a pot. Will the broken down akadama clog things up?
Any advice would be appreciated!
