I had seen the newscasts about it back when it first hit the news, too. But last night they showed the actual body cam video from the officer that first went into the house. And played the 911 call made by Jordan, the 19 YO who had escaped and made that 911 call, who had never talked to anyone on a phone before, who didn't know what 'medications' were, and other common everyday words she had no knowledge of. And the interview with her and her older sister. It is heartbreaking.

I think I could gladly torture and kill those parents...I can't remember being so sickened about

something in a long, long time. Still so hard to believe in this day and age. That someone,

somehow didn't catch on to those "zeros" before that poor little gal escaped. Just makes me

so, so very angry!!! I did see it on 20/20 and have not been able to get it out of my mind since.

Turpin children

I saw the episode and it was astonishing. It left me with many questions. And I hope Diane sawyer of others follow up because these 13 children ranging in ages we horrifically abused.

Although public contributions for these kids (from private citizens) amounted to over $600,000, the money did not reach those children to assist them and educate them as was intended. It was funneled away into a labyrinth of legal, public and private agencies with no transparency or accountability, with the excuse of confidentiality.

Some of them were living in horrific foster care situations, sometimes ejected from foster housing immediately after they reach the age (18 or 16). Some of them have not been able to learn how to even use public transportation, find housing or food, count change, or receive the minimum socialization in catch-up education. Some have been on the street, naive, with no money or protection. Apparently one is going to college and studying engineering but is very private and does not want much exposure to his circumstances broadcast. Understandable.

These children have been severely failed by agencies that were charged with looking after them and providing that money donated for them. And under the guise of “confidentiality,” there has been no oversight or transparency.

One foster care company called Care Net has failed miserably. Other foster care settings a lot of sexual and other abuse to these are extremely abused children. No accountability, even though many of them had appointed “guardians.”

This malfeasance made me boiling mad. It is an outrage. That they were repeatedly further abused by government agencies is completely monstrous.

These kids were chained in their home, not fed, not bathed, washed, educated. They had to to steal food from their parents, and were punished further if caught. They were absolutely filthy and so was the house — clutter, of all variety including human feces and urine. The home reeked of filth.

The child who escaped one early morning spoke very fractured English and syntax and didn’t understand some simple words that we all take for granted even at the age of eight or less. She was a young teen, sweet, direct and charming given what she’d endured. Unsocialized beyond the confines of that house.

Years have passed. More hellish abuse by Riverside County and the state of California. These once children are older now, they have largely not been helped or educated or healed. They have an enormous amount of catching up to do on almost all fronts.

Sad, maddening and infuriating.

The way in which the children were treated is so disturbing that I can't watch any of these programs. I do read the occasional article, stomach-turning though it is, and it's gratifying to see the children having lives of freedom and hopefully have positive futures.

The state of California is failing those children miserably.

Dugard’s foundation has created a fund to receive donations for the 13 Turpin children.

I don't understand the animal abuse videos. Dogs hanging in meat houses, being beaten before they're cooked alive. Or the beagle's (dogs) being used for drug testing. I can't watch ANY of it Immersing myself in pure misery......I would eventually go insane.

I don't know much about it but certainly problems of parents with mental illness and others with and without diagnosable problems who abuse their children are not a strictly California phenomenon. The same is true about problems of child welfare and foster home agencies and practices - inadequate services, inadequate funding, inadequate screening, inadequate staffing and all the rest are common everywhere, aren't they?

Perhaps the question is about what the state is doing for them NOW.

A shockingly and unacceptably high percentage of females are victims of sexual abuse as children. Often by family members and by family friends. The prevalence may be a socio-economic correlation but certainly not a geographic one.

What is any state doing about that now? What has been done in the past?

I watched. Just unbelievable what some people are capable of! Their time will come.

@Elmer J Fudd...It seems in the article, I skimmed over it...$600K was donated to the family, by the general public, to help them get settled and back on their feet...yet none of the money has been distributed to them. This is what Diane Sawyer was referring to. The state is being blamed for not distributing the money....or....helping them in general. Welfare, EBT cards. Housing. Pell grants. Nothing is being offered to them...except foster care.

I've known about this case for years and followed it. So I couldn't wait to see last night's 20/20. That previously 17 year old who was the only one brave enough to escape didn't know what sidewalks were or medications and had never talked to another person before. If those parents ever see the light of day again it will a travesty of justice. They are two ultra-religious freaks and to look at the body cam of the filth in that house makes a person sick. The fat parents ate three meals a day including desserts and made the kids eat one peanut butter sandwich a day and they were chained to the bed if they tried to steal food. Some of the girls had arms the size of infants and will never be able to bear children because of the starvation they had. These horrible monsters deserve the same treatment. I don't see how these kids will ever get free of their abuse. My question is how did this sweet little girl have the courage when her sister was 29 and there was an older brother too. With the $600,000, the state should have found them a decent home for the older kids to live together and put the youngest up for adoption instead of placing them in foster homes. I hope the parents were made to watch this show.

I did not. But I did see the Law & Order: SVU episode, and it spoke to me so much, I knew it had to be real. It was called The book of Esther. Which led me to look up the case. I was so so horrified. How can anyone do that to anybody, justified what they did via the bible is even more disturbing, but HOW could they do it?!

Money was collected from private sources and given to the state? Or to a different recipient? Who's responsible for sitting on it?

Sadly this is not a once in a life time story. Every few years one of these rises to the surface. This presentation is really awful. They do this sooo disjointed. It's like they don't know how to tell a story. I have never cared for DSawyer...she's really BAD at this. Is there a better presentation done of this story? This is soooo awful. How are they still on TV at all. ABC is really really horrid. uggg They never tell us why these two are the only spokes people. There are three kids between these two girls..why aren't they on?? This is the WROST presentation. Soo many holes, so many details not told. If you can't tell a story DONT!!

I watched and it was almost more than I can comprehend. It was horrifying and the fact that this went on for years makes it doubly so. It was mentioned that the mother had been abused as a child but I wonder if both parents suffered with a mental illness - how could anyone treat their children that way. And now it appears that the state has also let these children down - was there a court appointed guardian? an attorney to oversee their finances?

Unfortunately this episode of 20/20 seemed typical of so many other shows of a similar nature - drawn out, repeating the same info and videos multiple times, with little teasers here and there. It could have been presented in a one hour episode - but with two hours I felt there was more information that could have been included. Did they try to interview any neighbors? No one noticed? Did the children ever go to a doctor or hospital - were they never ill? How were the cell phones acquired and who paid the bills. How did they transport 13 children to Disney or to the wedding? Very little was said about the other children - DS stated that it was to protect their privacy but I would have been interested in learning more.

These kids have been let down in so many ways it's pathetic. There's no way they could be expected to navigate any legal system on their own. After years of neglect, filth and starvation, some of them may never be able to lead a normal life.
