Need Help Picking New Front Entry Door
Comments (18)Have you priced doors yet? We've been pricing them for the past two years since we desperately need ours replaced. More glass = more expense. If expense isn't an issue, my point is moot. Also, if you are doing doubles versus the single with sidelites, you will be talking a custom size which may cost even more. On top of that, unless you go with a very well made door, the glass may not be warrantied for as long and the insulating levels will be less. In shopping for doors, Provia has an excellent warranty on their door AND glass, most others like Therma-Tru have very limited warranties on their glass; it's a read the fine print type of thing. The downside is Provia is a higher priced than Therma-Tru and only sold through dealers who install the doors themselves. I live in a center hall colonial in New England, I don't think double doors fit my house style or my neighborhood. I've lived in homes with them in the past and when they are full sized, double doors, they are indeed quite nice to have. Do you have a standard 36" door with 12" sidelites? Your double doors would be two 30" doors. Privacy would be a concern unless you covered the windows or opted for designer glass. With the expense, be sure you truly want what you think you want, consider all the changes, before going that route....See MoreFront Deck Ideas Needed to add interest to a small house entrance
Comments (6)@Anna & @NHBabs- I was trying to say add an above window pergola...not add a window =) We definitely don't have the room for that inside. I think with Dougs design a pergola would be too much though. We can definitely do a smaller, more affordable version of that gorgeous front deck. We are experienced DIYers and can do much or all of the work ourselves and with a few changes its completely affordable. I actually have more of the pavers from our walkway that can be added to the front area to widen that landing out some, though we won't go as wide on the left side as is shown because our yard gets narrower there against the neighbors yard. We can do stone that matches our existing stone out back on the steps and instead of stone columns we can do thick wood posts with black metal caps, and the affordable black aluminum railings that we had planned anyway, which would match our new back deck perfectly. We have considered stone in the chimney at some point in the future, though it won't be next year. It won't be quite as grand as Dougs design but gives a very similar look for alot less $$. I think to the left of the door we can add a long, covered, decorative bench box for wood storage in that space. That way we have wood for a week in the winter without trudging to the fire wood shelters out back every day or so. (We have 2 wood stoves that get used alot in the winters here.) We never use our entrance unless we are going out the front door for mail, and all our friends use the back entrance as there is ample parking out there. I can see us sitting out there on the deck with a glass of wine in the shade though. Since the only visitors we get out front are deliveries and people selling stuff, we probably don't need to add anything for sheltering them lol. Still struggling with house color. Currently its a pale yellowish color my husband hates (ditto for me) and it clashes with our new stone. We were thinking maybe something more earthy in a brown/gray...meaning not just brown or gray, something with a mix of both. Or maybe a darker beige. We'd like to darken it up a bit. The shingles are a dark gray but do have a little brown/tan in them along with the black and gray. Its called Canadian Driftwood....See MoreNeed help with plant / decor advice for front entrance
Comments (8)Notice how Doug has removed the narrow planting beds near the door to create a generous entrance porch. I would also widen the walk out to the drive so the two people could walk abreast. Keep the plantings with only a few types of plants, including something bright (either foliage or flowers) flanking the entrance porch where it meets the walkway as Yardvaark’s suggested. That can be in pots or in the ground. You want large enough swaths of plants for most of the plantings so that so they will read well from the road as well as looking nice from the near view. Plantings should be low enough so that they don’t block the sight lines to the door and so folks on the sidewalk don’t feel like they have to try to avoid brushing up against encroaching plants....See MoreLooking for ideas on how to decorate the front entry way
Comments (6)On the right lower deck, I’d have a seating area … chairs, table, bench, etc, any color: I’d also have a few bigger pots of plants, instead of a bunch of smaller ones. Rendering of front entry with chairs: I’d get plant stands or other bases to have varying levels of decor you do, not just have everything sitting on the decking....See MoreRelated Professionals
