if you have the room, a library style ladder would be interesting, just saw one recently, it looked clever, and a rung was used for dish towel. ... There are two ladders I recommend - one is expensive and fancy, and the other is more economical. Both are super slim. Regardless, a 3-step stepstool is the one to get - no point in getting a stepstool that will only add a foot or so to your height - you'd be surprised how many are like that, and you don't realize until you get it home.

The Williams-Sonoma stepladders are really light, and really really thin. But expensive. It looks like they offer two models now, so they have changed from just the one they used to offer (link below).

I have the Polder step stool from Amazon (link below). I got for my cabinets up to my 9’ ceiling. I learned about on this forum. It’s about $70. It's thin and is sturdy and each step has grooves for non-skid.

I see, you do have a blank end there, maybe hange a two step tadder on the side for easy access. Lowe's has sturdy two step ladders.

I have one of these in navy that I keep out all the time at the end of a cabinet run. I'm 5'2" so I use it fairly often. I can reach most of the high shelves in my kitchen with this stool. It's very stable and has a good wide base. I have a cute celadon green colored step stool that I purchased from Home Goods several years ago for $20. I use it often to get to items in my upper cabinets. I keep it next to my kitchen cabinets for easy access. This stool comes in many colors too.

For safety and stability the best is a wide foot step and a bar to hold onto. There is only one cabinet I need a little step stool for since I'm tall and I keep it in my panty, but for cleaning in the cabinets I use my gorilla ladder I got at Home Depot that I keep in the garage. No it isn't a cutie, but it isn't ugly either. I feel very stable on it. They come in 2 or 3 step.

Absolutely go with a stepstool that has something to hold onto. My wife wanted to use chairs and stools as shown above, but for $40, risking a fall is just plain stupid, IMO. We use what is shown below for exactly what you want, reaching shelves/cabinets, putting up Christmas trees, reaching ceiling light fixtures, etc. The cross bar on top allows one to 'lean into' the stepstool for really high reaches and keeps one steady and secure.
