Upper cab or not on this wall? 3 choices
Comments (26)Joy--the tile like that in the "no cab" option was just a software issue. I wouldn't do that, but doing something that looked right would take some thought. Your idea is interesting. Buehl--yeah, #2 just looks lonely, huh? You made me LOL too! Brianandarnell--I've been starting to feel weighed down by the decisions. Someone else used the term "decision prison" recently (Fori maybe? Marcolo?) and I yelled "that's me!" when I read it. Very good description. Oldhouse--I've always liked the look of a cab sitting on the counter too. I struggled with finding the right granite (loved Bianco Antico), but have settled on some 4cm Carrara for at least part of the counters. I'm back and forth for exactly what to do. Today I'm leaning towards a wood island counter with Carrara perimeters/peninsula. I've decided to focus on one issue at a time instead of getting jumbled up in so many things that need to be decided. Thanks for the encouragement. Flwrs--I like the hutch for those reasons too. Thanks for the vote on the finishes. Isle2isle--I do have a lot of counterspace there, huh? I'm SOOOOO excited! A dark island does make sense, but am wondering about it being trendy. Oh well, you can't NOT be trendy somehow or another. I'm planning on doing my final storage inventory this weekend now that I've decided on the two windows and less uppers on that wall. If I don't have enough storage for dishes and glasses (which I don't think I do), I'll go for the glass front hutch to the counter. Ohhuuuhhh....just thought of another decision. One door on that hutch or two???? Prison bars closing in.... ;)...See More16" space between counter and upper cabs too short?
Comments (25)We had 15" in our old kitchen and I hated it, but it really depends on how you're using the space. In our kitchen, it was the primary work space so I was always hitting the cabinets, and the stand mixer kept gouging the underside of the cabinet when I'd forget to pull it out all the way before flipping it back. But if, in contrast, you're using the space to house a microwave or toaster oven or what-have-you--16" will be fine (and better to have the storage space there). Don't forget that you can put three shelves in a 34" cabinet, too, though. We have three in a 32" cabinet and love it--every shelf doesn't need to have a full 12" of clearance. I can reach all of our shelves (intentionally designed that way) and we keep cans/jars on the lowest shelf since they don't need height. How tall are your ceilings? If you post that with a floor plan, I'm sure you will get lots of feedback and ideas on how to plan the cabinetry! If you're doing custom cabinetry, I wouldn't feel hemmed in by standards sizes and distances--one of the benefits is that you can mix it up and do what works best for your space....See MoreFinal KM - Small, Quartz, SS BS, Mix'd Cab & Counters
Comments (35)Beautiful transformation! Love the blingy backsplash! The tri-trash center looks like a terrific use of a corner cab. Love the mullions in your glass cabs - very pretty! It looks like such a warm and inviting space, and I love how it's integrated in your home now. Enjoy your beautiful new space!...See Moreinnovative ideas for storage in upper cabs?
Comments (16)Can't remember who but there is a photo posted of a pot rack running across an upper cabinet -- basically a hanging rod across the top with hooks for hanging pots. I have a flat lazy susan in the upper cabinet next to my cook top that has most of oils and vinegars. There is space on either side for a row of bottles. I came to hate those things for spices and small things that get lost in the center, but with taller bottles, it works well. The most efficient spice storage I have found is a drawer with upright bottles. I have 110 bottles in a 24" drawer. I have some rubs and baking items in the cabinet above -- using one of those riser things and another lazy susan for baking decorations. I have always put foils and wraps in a drawer or lower space -- they are going to be longer than the depth of an upper cabient unless you have 24" deep space. My hot pads are also in a drawer next to my ovens....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
