Can I put cast iron stove grates in the dishwasher?

Will running the cast iron stovetop grates thru the dishwasher damage the surface?

NO! Treat them exactly like you would your cast iron skillet. Season them, and never wash them.

Never wash them? How do you get the grease build-up and gunk off of them, then? I have washed them before by hand, thought the dishwasher would make an easier time of it.

Like mojavean states, the grates are coated with a porcelain enamel, almost a glass like substance. It will wear, and it might be susceptible to attack by "some" of the stronger dishwashing detergents that have potassium or sodium hydroxide in them. I quote one sentence from Wikipedia under the topic 'dishwasher'-"glass dissolves slowly in alkaline aqueous solution."... you can read the article yourself. I mentioned before, it's like the porcelain coating on French cast iron ovens, such as Le Creuset and Staub. Having said that, it would probably take years to have much of an effect. Still, I would rather have the bottom of my pans wear out this coating. The grates will take a seasoning, you just wipe them with the smallest amount of oil, and turn the burner back on. Some oils smoke less than others, refined light olive oil is good, this seasoning may burn off and stick to the bottom of your expensive copper pan, especially if it's a fresh seasoning....otherwise, not a problem, and in fact it probably protects the porcelain from wear. The big thing with cast iron, even porcelain cast iron, is to keep it dry. Sometimes you'll see a light 'bloom' of rust on it, just wipe it off. But if rust gets under the porcelain, it will lift it off and chip it. To clean, I use an almost dry scrubby sponge, and leave the bowls on the cooktop. If I spill a mess of flour, or manage to make a complete mess, I do take the bowls to the sink and rinse them there.

I would treat the grates just like a cast iron frying pan and season them in a slow oven. You will find directions in the link below. First heat your grills and get off that sticky surface. Wipe it down with dry paper towels, when it can be handled but is still warm and wash hot in soapy dishwater --not the dishwasher, wash them by hand. I used something called Perforce grease cleaner from Sam's Club on my American Range cast iron grates. I just followed the directions on the bottle. I have also used Dawn Power Dissolver. You have to be careful to avoid getting the degreaser on any stainless steel parts as it will permanently streak them.

Bluestar grates will likely fit in any dishwasher. I put the entire top of my Bluestar in the dishwasher. Grates, bowls, burners with ignitors, everything. When you put the burners back, you just blow the water out of the tips first. Shouldn't be an issue with the Culinarian as I think the burner caps lift off. If you are just doing grates on the Bluestar it is easy. Lay them face down in the top rack. Stacking them a bit is fine, but stagger them out a bit. I imagine something similar would work with the Culinarian.

Don't do it! Use either a Scotch non-scratch plastic pad (lightly, and not wet, just barely damp), a Scotch non-scratch nylon pad, or "The Ringer" chain mail for cast iron. Actually 90% of the time I just use a damp paper towel while the grates are still on the stove, but for crusted-on things I'll use one of the aforementioned. I never get them totally wet or soaked.

I wash mine in the sink since they do get gunky after a bit. I use a scotch brite pad to get them clean.

You don't need to worry about the finish on them other than not letting them rust.

Check the User Manual for your appliance. I just checked a few and LG gas ranges' grates can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

I put my Viking grates through the dishwasher maybe once a month. They are fine after 9 years.

Porcelain coated cast iron is different than cast iron. But, just like your Le Creuset, it should not be a victim of your DW. And I’m one to put everything remotely possible in a DW. Exceot for cast iron.

When in doubt, refer to the manufacturers care and cleaning requirements. For the porcelain coated cast iron, of the Viking, for instance. Which specify a wet towel for ”crusties” , followed by scraping with a nylon spatula, etc.

I wouldn't put my cast iron grates in the dishwasher. But I do put them in the sink, sprinkle Bar keepers friend on them and scrub with a scotch brite pad. I then rinse them off and dry them. Then I put them back on the stove and turn all the burners on high for a little bit to make sure they are dry. I have never had one bit of rust or any other issue with my grates for the 10 years I've had them.

I always wash my range cast iron grates in the sink with a scotch brite pad also. Rinse and dry them; then they look good! I have had my Samsung range a few years; the grates do not rust if you dry them right after washing them. I would not put them in the dishwasher.
