Help with basement family room design...
Comments (10)Appreciate the responses, this site is always so helpful in generating ideas. cabinbuilder -- a corner fireplace would be nice, but I don't think it will work here. The long outside wall will be taken up with two large windows and a frenchdoor to take advantage of natural light -- which doesn't leave a lot of wall space remaining. We're also trying to tap into existing gas pipes/vents which only gives us the 2 end walls. But will noodle it around... Love the idea of cabinets near the game room. beaglesdoitbetter -- What beautiful rooms -- we have a similar fireplace to the first in our great room with a black granite surround. So hubby wants to do something quite different in the basement. LOVE the fireplace in your bedroom -- it's so unique. caminnc -- I did also think of candice olsen -- she does a lot of beautiful basements -- I will check out her stuff fnmroberts -- I'm going to try to get to the fireplace shop near us for some ideas -- good thought. I need to have tile for mudroom, paint and carpet choices by Monday so scrambling to try to get the full picture. Afraid if I delay the contactors at all, I may not see them again for a month. Good for you to do your basement yourself -- you do beautiful work. I will ask about sound insulation for utility area -- I hadn't thought about that. I made the mistake of telling my husband he could do whatever he wanted in the basement -- now having a hard time keeping my word on that. We usually have different visions but can come together in the end. People complain that their husbands don't have any opinion on decorating -- mine definitely does. Luckily he has good taste!...See Morelong - need advice about 1970's basement family room
Comments (6)"We have not had any leaks but how difficult is it to change out portions of a drywall ceiling?" I've had a drywall ceiling for 15 years in the basement and haven't had any reason to touch it. If you want to identify any potential problems while the ceiling is open, fine. This way you minimize opening the ceiling at a later time. Say for instance there's a bathroom above on the first floor in a house that's 40 years old. I might look at the tub or shower traps as potential issues and replace them while the ceiling is open. Every house is different and you don't need to anticipate every possibility. It's drywall. If you need to cut it open, cut it open. You repair the ceiling and paint it. It's not brain surgery, but alot of the tools are the same. Ron...See MorePaint color for walkout basement family room? Comments (14)Hi, northcarolina. Right, the paint looks fine in some lights and on some walls. I do have a carpet scrap; didn't think of taking that to the paint store, but I will on my next trip.. We have 32 sample cans of paint in our basement, we still don't have the downstairs painted, and some of the rooms upstairs after we finished still don't look quite right to me. (I also am not known for my design sense.) I haven't tried a gray yet, although I put a dot of the Kilim Beige in our MB on top of this Cochise we're trying out in the basement, and it looks very gray in comparison. But it ended up looking "dead" upstairs (next to the purple wall in our MB), and I already wish I could change it in the MB. I probably will, although DH thinks I don't paint carefully enough and gets in a twist every time I say I'm going to redo a room. Can't really blame him, we're in this house 3 1/2 years and the paint saga is still going on! I did ask SW to give me 50% of the Cochise, and we're going to try that next, although a one-foot sample on the wall is a pretty uninteresting color. The Sagey looks great with the carpet upstairs, and on the one wall that extends to our basement, but if we use that it would mean green in the LR, DR area, and down here. With the green granite in the kitchen, I think it's just too much green for me, although now I'm thinking maybe we should do that in the family room in the basement and do the basement office and guest room, which have more light, in different colors. So much for "unifying" the look down here. I'd really like to know how your color adventure turns out. I hope you'll post pix, maybe in this thread? Thanks for your help, and good luck! More ideas, anyone? And thanks in advance....See MoreBasement Family Room Decorating
Comments (37)Hi Pamela. These houzz discussions are quick with people offering various opinions. They often miss critical steps. The things I get from my clients from the beginning are (and I spend quite a bit of time on this) 1) Inspirational photos (based on comments you have made and your ideabooks, you are not interested in traditional decor, but what exactly, I am guessing). So, for your sake and others, photos of what you like and want the room to look like are critical, None has to be exact, just the direction 2) If you want future flexibility. If so, I'd buy neutral for larger items like a rug. 3) Photos of entire room 4) Measurements. 5) Functionality: how you want the room to function. Example: rarely used, used often and must accomodate x amount of people, etc. So, I cannot tell you if that rug is appropriate for your room, as I don't know the answers to those questions. It seems to ignore the recliners, though. 2 things I am observing: the recliners are large and brown and don't seem to fit your future direction (although could be pulled in with the right additional elements). The pool table light fixture the same: very traditional and you are trying to fit it in. Hope that helps....See MoreAudrey G.
