First Frost of the season

Yesterday we had our first frost here in WV. Did not kill the plants and once the sun came up it was all gone. Chilly temps this week but next week we will go back into the 60's. Fall has definitely arrived here. Hoping to finish mulching the garden beds and close everything down for the season.

We had a hard frost last night, many plants have sad look. Supposed to be a couple degrees colder tonight.

Thanks, folks! I harvested the remainder of everything yesterday evening, covered the tomatillo, since it still has some maturing fruits, and left the broccoli. I haven't made it out to the garden yet, but given the looks of things from the window, I think we did have a frost last night. The zucchini leaves are wilted, but the broccoli looks fine. If this baby decides to take a nap, I'll head out and uncover the tomatillo, and see if it survived. Last Spring at Home Depot, I bought a 6-pack of broccoli on a whim, and it just keeps producing and producing and producing. I have to say...it's the best $1.88 I ever spent!

Does yours bear fruit? Supposedly, the berries on these are very popular with many bird species. I'm thinking about planting some.

Shasta Daisies bottom leaves....

I dunno the answer, but a lady that lives a few blocks away has a garden that surrounds the property....half of which are daisies (she has a white theme...very pretty!), but I'm not sure if they are Shasta (I really don't know the difference)all I know is they started blooming a few weeks before mine (this week). From the sidewalk just a few feet from the perimeter of the beds, I can see hardly any foliage at the base...just long flowering stalks. I didn't see anything ugly about it though. I do know that in spring before the flowering begins there is some nice looking foliage at the base. Can you post us a picture? Vera

We had a hard frost yesterday and today. Lots of stuff suddenly done. However, the 2 tall and well budded [over 30 buds] scapes of Belle Isle Sentry are still straight and strong. The little scape on Carmen Renee [which is not supposed to rebloom and never has before] is fine too.Of course they will never get to bloom.

Our predicted 29 degree low for last night turned out to be 39 degrees. Cloud cover held the heat in I'm told. My Coleus and Tropical Hibiscus are still standing proud............Next week I will tear these and the other annuals down and start moving my daylilies into their winter positions. This is always a fun time as after finding room for about the first dozen daylilies I have to start kicking myself for having 5 times more to find places for. Will I ever learn?..............Maryl
