Shasta Daisies bottom leaves....

I always have trouble with the bottom of the Shasta Daisy stalks. By the time the blooms are done, so are the bottom leaves. I didn't overwater - (although there has been very hot temps with no rain...) - and since they are so unsightly, I cut them way back - to like six inch sticks.

I probably should have waited until fall or after first frost of the season, but they were looking ugly - and now look worse! (Ha Ha) Now what?

I dunno the answer, but a lady that lives a few blocks away has a garden that surrounds the property....half of which are daisies (she has a white theme...very pretty!), but I'm not sure if they are Shasta (I really don't know the difference)all I know is they started blooming a few weeks before mine (this week). From the sidewalk just a few feet from the perimeter of the beds, I can see hardly any foliage at the base...just long flowering stalks. I didn't see anything ugly about it though. I do know that in spring before the flowering begins there is some nice looking foliage at the base.

vera - I cut them down, but wow! your post made me feel so much better. I thought I did something wrong because there was hardly any foliage on the bottom and yet, beautiful in the spring.

It is possible with the drought that I've experienced some wilting, which could have caused the leaves to fall off (?). I cut them down - too ugly to look at and want to see if new foliage appears.

I've never potted a Shasta Daisy, but I can tell you it is the most invasive plant in my garden here in Chicago. Even if only one of your pots lives, count on those seeds blowing in the wind and springing up ALL OVER THE PLACE, for years to come. Not only that, my seeds came free with a purchase of jeans for my daughter at a girls,teen-store. (Delia's do you have that store in Switzerland?)I never expected them to germinate. Now I live with them forever. I just dig up the plants and move them. I'm in zone 5 so winter won't be a problem. Truly, I would not fret over a Shasta Daisy today, because it might haunt you forever!

I am no expert but I grew shasta daisies from seed a few years ago. I knew less then than I do now... and I managed to keep them alive! From what I recall, I didn't use any lights so they just grew in natural light. If your seem spindly and too weak in the stem, I wonder of adding a small mound of soil around the stem would help? I had them in small pots and I'd put them outside on warm sunny days so they could get some real sunlight. I also put them in the ground as soon as the temps stayed away from low 30's at night. They survived very well...I may have killed a few but honestly I found them to be quite hardy and forgiving of my knowledge deficit! Good luck. Lori

I haven't sprayed anything for them, mainly because they are hard to get to. I have smooshed quite a few, and dropped them into a cup of soapy water like I do when I see any Japanese beetles. But the main thing to do is prevention. Last year was the first time I saw any in my gardens. So after researching it, during fall cleanup, I cut down most of the plants that were visited by the bug in spring. Since they lay their eggs in the stems, getting rid of the stems in fall or before, will limit their numbers next season. Good thing, though, that they don't kill a plant, just makes their leaves ugly. I think....

I'm not sure. Our climate is pretty dry too after mid June until around late Sept-early Oct.

Now I forgot to tell you mine have only been blooming since last week and all the foliage is still in place and lovely. Plus I know her's started about 1.5 weeks before mine and her foliage is way sparse. That is one reason why I'm not sure if those are Shasta Daisy she has. I suppose I could knock on the door and ask. Have only said "hello" to her in passing, but she seems like a gardener who knows her plants:)

Carrie, I have the cultivar "BECKY" shasta daisy and they do not seem to get as ugly as some daisy at the bottom. I love mine. They are going to seed now, would you like some? Can anyone tell me if there is anything special I need to do to the seeds?
