Adding 30% to my house (300 feet), do I need an interior designer?

I'm adding on to my 1000 sq ft beach cottage - which will expand my kitchen, give me a dining room (it's an eat-in kitchen now), another bathroom, laundry and walk in closet. I'm nearly ready to submit plans to the city for permitting. Hopefully we will begin the remodel in the spring 2022. I do not have a contractor yet.

The big question is whether or not I need to add a designer to my team. I know a good designer can save money & time, but I think this is a relatively small build and straightforward. I am planning on doing semi-custom cabinets for the most part and want a practical, easy to use, easy to keep clean kitchen.

How much effort should I expect if I do the design myself? Do I really need to have renderings or 3D imaging? How do I coordinate with my contractor if I am the project planner/designer? I'm retired, 61 years old and figure this is my forever home. I've got the money and I want to do this right.
