Countertop installation help: am I too picky or that's the norm?
Comments (17)Thanks foodonastump and RoRo67, I've reported to my design house eventually and am expecting their feedback. I know 7mm discrepancy is not a big deal compare to a visible crack or dents to someone. Still I'm expecting the fabricator can do a better job to make that line close to perfect. It shouldn't be that hard to do when they install if they pay attention to the details. But now, I'm not sure the fabricator is willing to do a second visit to fix it....See MoreGranite Counter Top Dark and Cracking / Chipping
Comments (8)Thanks to graniteshop for jumping in here. Now that I have seen what an air vent is (they are not required in my area), I have a better understandiung of why it may have cracked. Another fabricator wrote the following: "The hole for the vent is drilled all the way through the material like a faucet hole and is most likely an 1-3/8" diameter just like the rest of the faucet holes. There could be a couple causes of the crack. It could have been cracked during the install and not noticed until this point. It's also possible that they crack was caused when the hole was drilled. If they did it on site with the wrong style core bit enough heat could have been built up to cause the stone to crack. Also, if the cabinets were not level or if the top was not properly shimmed the top could crack after install. If the top was cracked before install it will still probably be perfectly flat. If it was cracked after install then you may be able to look down the top and see either a high point or low point in the top at the location of the crack. " Seems like good info to me....See MoreRepairing a chip and a crack in my granite counter top
Comments (14)No probably not, but they might consider fixing it. The top guy is going to blame the cabinet guy, and the cabinet guy is going to blame the top buy, and the builder is (has) told you the house had a 1 year warranty. The subs (cabinet/top guys) have to warranty a year (hence how the build warranties it). I would try the original installer/fab shop, if you talk calm and non-threatening they might come look at it, and offer to fix (or discount the fix). Of course, this depends on the reputation of the sub the builder hired in the first place. If it was my job, I would at least come look at it, and try to find the reason for the crack. Whether it is a quality/workmanship issue, or a damage/abuse issue. Depending on what I found, and the attitudes of those involved, I could be moved to either fix it, discount the fix, or nothing. In your case, you have nothing to lose by being nice and calm, and asking for a fair solution....See MoreShould I paint my dark cherry cabinets or get new countertop?
Comments (20)okay..so so far I understood to you the granite is a biggest issue then..change for quiter countertop surface you love(but you need to decide whether you're changing color/stain of the cabinets. since they have to correlate, colorwise). different backsplash. quieter surface will give you more freedom with backsplash too. different pulls(unless you like the ones you chose) Learn pros/cons of your preffered countertop material in advance..Quartz is not bulletproof..(as granite isn't too. none of them are-everything will have pros/cons) for example, I love mitered edge more than rounded-but more possibility it might chip. Find as much as you can about every material you're going to install. If you do decide to paint/re-stain (and no, I'm not advocating white, like, at all)-it should be a pro job(unless you're willing to do it yourself..and know how, and will take lots of time) and yes, it'll chip too if say a fork falls or a knife and bangs onto it)) everything might chip-but on stain you'll see it less/will be less bothered in short learn as much as you can about what you'll be working with..and check your own tolerance to imperfections I can't see your kitchen fully..maybe you won't need any seams. if you do though-you'll see it to a degree on quiter light Quartz. not a biggie but first several days one can't keep eyes off that seam)) then one gets used to. backsplash-whatever will be-decide where you finish it(I'd do lower bottom cabinet level) and how. every guy/gal you'll talk to-being it a store or your GC or installer or..-ask questions. Don't presume they know you don't know..some will educate you, some won't. Ask everything.....See Moredarbuka
